A couple of questions regarding Ultima 7.

First Question
------------

Can Ultima 7 be run in a window mode, and if so how do I do it ?

Second Question
--------------

I have read in these forums that you cannot get past a point in the Game known as
the Cube Generator, the game corrupts, is this the same for everybody ?

Has it been fixed ?

If you only want to use the GOG install, the easiest way to get out of full screen mode is to hit Alt+Enter. You can also edit the DOSBox configuration file to always start in windowed mode.

As far as I know, the Cube Generator issue is a case-by-case basis. Most people don't have the issue, a few do, and you probably won't know if you do until you get to that point.

To fix both of these issues, I suggest playing in Exult (if you're willing to put in a bit more effort to install it.) You can find it at: http://exult.sourceforge.net. Download the current snapshot (it says "Unstable", it is NOT) and run it. It's a fairly painless process; you can install the music packages to get higher quality music throughout the game as well.

EDIT::
I noticed your alias is "Macos10", so I'm assuming you're using a Mac.... If that's the case, installing Exult may be a bit more of an issue. You can visit the Exult forums and get a lot of help there if you do run into problems. The people there are generally nice and helpful. Just don't make any comments about old Ultima VII bugs unless you want Dominus losing it and screaming about how Exult is NOT Ultima VII... I've done it myself. :)

Thanks

I run Windows as well just for gaming purposes.

I assume by what you say that Exult is the best way.

Yeah I suggest Exult over plain old DOSBox because they've done quite a bit to add features (all optional of course) and fix bugs. Plus it's cross-platform so you don't have to use Windows (or DOSBox) to play the game using Exult. :)

BTW... I'm not sure why this message board does it, but it keeps screwing up my links. I fixed it above.... :/

I have been trying to setup Exult in OSX but changing the config file is a complete nightmare for me :(

I did what I thought and nothing worked at all :(

Ended up setting it all up in WIndows, that was really easy :)

Thanks for the replies.

No problem.

I'm glad you're at least able to play it. Let us know what you think of the game and Exult. :D

OK, I played it under Exult in WIndows, I like the way you can adjust loads of different aspects of the game.

Not having played Ultima 7 before I had only heard about it.

I got out of the the starting town after much running around asking lots of different people questions, what with that and party members keeping on about being hungry did not do it for me.

Not sure if I want to continue onward, it's not quite doing it for me I am afraid, I may go back to it one day.

To get them to shut up about being hungry, I think you just have to put some food in their backpacks. The stupid quest at the beginning where you have to ask everyone about the crime is (I think) an early attempt at an in game tutorial. I don't remember HAVING to talk to everyone on the planet after that, but I did it anyway because I'm anal like that.

OK, will try the food in the backpacks thing and have a go at moving onward :)
For U7, food in the backpacks won't do it. (That's for Ultima 6.) You actually have to "use" the food item and target the person who will eat it.

Yes, your party members are capable of slaying dragons but are apparently incapable of feeding themselves.

Now, this isn't necessarily a huge time-waster if you're carrying relatively 'big' food items like mutton shanks, but if you try to do it entirely with tiny things like eggs and carrots, it will take many of them and this becomes more than a bit annoying.

Serpent Isle mitigated this problem by adding a hotkey command (F) that tells the targeted NPC to do their own feeding. This makes things much less of a hassle - the only downside is that they consider both quest-related food items and garlic (a spellcasting reagent) to be food and may gobble those up on you instead of the expected bread and mutton. This shouldn't ever result in a plotstopper, fortunately.

I believe that Exult added the (F) hotkey command to the original Ultima 7, which was probably the single most welcome hassle-reduction feature.

Was the disappearing object bug in Exult ever fixed? I seem to recall seeing forums posts about it here on GOG and at the Exult forums.

Yeah it's been fixed. You'll need to download the latest snapshot though. It says "unstable" but it's really not.

Oh, that's good news, I might have to try it out when I get to Ultima 7 (working up the courage to start the series, lol.). Thank you for the info.

Actually you don't need to touch the config file at all. The important part is to put the Ultima VII files in the global Library, not the local user Library. There is usually a local and a global version of everything, the idea is that certain things should work for all users and cetain things for each user individually. The Exult documentation says that both work, but I only found the gobal Library to work. There you need to just drop in the "gamedat" and "static" folders of the game. I've included a little screenshot of the correct path
