For some reason I have Ultima 4 twice in my GoG library. Once is just labeled "Ultima IV" and the other is "Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar."

I seem to recall at some point Ultima 4 was given away free by GoG, and I subsequently bought the Ultima 4-6 bundle, so I'd assume that is why I have it twice. My question is, is there a difference between the versions, and if so, which one is better or more complete?

I just looked at my Library and I have same situation.

Also, one Ultima IV is 16 MB, the other - 17 MB. Guess they might be different after all... XD

When you made your gog account you got a free copy of Ultima 4. When you bought the Ultima 4 + 5 + 6 (or Ultima complete bundle during a sale) you got the retail copy of Ultima 4.

According to the notes for each game, the free version has:

* manual 10 MB
* cluebook 2 MB
* spellbook 14 MB
* reference card 8 MB
* interview with Richard Garriott 87 MB
* map 2 MB

while the paid version has:

* manuals (3) 1 MB
* lorebooks (3) 38 MB
* reference cards (3) 11 MB
* spellbooks 12 MB
* cluebooks (3) 14 MB
* interview with Richard Garriott 87 MB
* maps (3) 7 MB

So the paid version has multiple manuals, multiple reference cards, lorebooks, more clues and more maps, as compared to the free version. The gameplay itself, however, should be exactly the same; the only difference is in the listed extras.

keep in mids teh 3 manuals, etc are 1 for each of the games in the bundle,
but yeah teh game itself should be teh same
though each has its own save game

That makes sense; I was wondering why the game would need three reference cards, lol.

So chances are, the manual in the standalone game might include the paid version's lorebook as well. Even though its filesize is (listed as being) so much larger, I seriously doubt that there's anything in the free version that's not in the paid one. So either the 10MB is a typo, or the larger file is an earlier, less-optimized version.

So which one is the paid version, "Ultima IV" or "Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar?" I don't suppose it matters, especially since I'm actually playing the game using XU4, but it's a matter of curiosity for me.

Also, is there a way to hide one of them so it doesn't show up in GOG Galaxy or my library web page? Just for the sake of soothing my OCD, mind you.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's "Ultima IV", because none of the other Ultima games include their subtitles until Ultima VII, and I got all the others from the collections.

You are correct about that. The wordier one is the free version.

Yes. Go to My Collection (click on Games, on the dropdown menu under your GOG username) then search or scroll for the game itself. In the bottom right corner of any game there's an arrow, which leads to another dropdown menu. One of the choices there is Hide Game.

The "manual" in the free version is the "lorebook" included in the paid version. The paid version's manual is actually the "manual" from the Collection CD. It's basically a "quick start card".
