According to the spell book, the Repond spell (Wizard spell A) is supposed to kill Orcs, Trolls, and Goblins... the same way that Cleric spell A kills the undead. But it isn't working at all for me. Every time I encounter a group of one of those creatures I try casting it multiple times with my 25 INT Wizard, but it always fails.

Am I not understanding how this spell is supposed to work?

IIRC, you can only successfully cast it once per combat (possibly per wizard); future attempts will always fail. (That's the tradeoff for it costing 0 MP.)

Then, it only has a 50% chance of even working at all. When it does work, however, it has a better than 50% chance of doing damage to, or outright killing, the creatures it affects.

For the record, "Pontori" (the equivalent cleric spell) works the exact same way, with the same limitations and the same odds of success.
My understanding is this.

1. If the spell has been cast earlier in the current battle, regardless of the caster or whether the previous attempt failed, the spell will automatically fail. (Note that this rule does not apply to the NES version, which differs in this respect.)
2. There is a 50% chance the spell will fail completely.
3. If the spell does succeed, each enemy has a (separate) 75% chance of being killed by it. (Note that, in the Amiga vesion the RNG seems to be bugged in a way that makes it frequrently hit all or no enemies.)

It's not per wizard; it's per battle. Therefore, you should only have the character you want to get the XP cast the spell, and have everyone else do something else (or just skip their turns) until the desired caster's turn comes up.

(Again, note that the NES version is different in this respect.)

Thanks to you both. I actually finally got a successful cast shortly after making this post, but didn't know how to delete the thread.

I think I just got very unlucky with the first half-dozen battles I tried to cast it in. Knowing that it is only a 50% successful cast rate makes sense now.

You're welcome. And be sure to mark dtgreene's post as the solution, when you have the chance.
