It does work in Windows 7. I'm playing it right now.
Three things to try if you don't get them running:

Uninstall and then reinstall the games outside of C:\Program Files
Run Video mode setup - and please use the start menu link, do not run the program directly.
Run as administrator

If it works for everybody else the problem is on your end, not GOG's. And without more information about your problems nobody can help you.

Oh, you're right, all along I thought I was using Windows 7, but it was actually Ubuntu! Silly me, will I ever learn!
Ok, this took a turn for the surreal.
If you can't get it to work with the suggestions above, try playing it in Exult. It is a reimplemantation of the engine, designed to work with modern OSes. For most people that runs much better than in DOSBox.

Right click on game icon

click compatability tab

Tick the box run in compatability mode for ... Win XP (service pac 3)

Apply !

problem solved :-)
