I played around a bit in Ultima II to get used to the mechanics and now I want to start over to actually play the game (I have very little food or gold left in my current game).

How on earth do I restart my game from scratch? If I try to create a new character, the game just tells me it's not a blank disk.

A quick google suggests I have to uninstall the game and reinstall it. Is that really the case????!!!

Thanks to anyone that can assist.

Try deleting the saved game. The file is called "PLAYER". The game should allow you to start again afterwards.

Had this same problem yesterday.
I tried deleting the save game PLAYER, but then it says there is no player disk.
I opened it in notepad, ctrl+A to select all, then delete. Erases all the info and leaves it blank for when you want to start a new character.

You guys beat my solution - when I was playing the thing off of the Ultima Collection CD, I installed #2 twice, leaving one compy of the game pristine, then simply overwrote the saved version with the unused copy every time I wanted to delete my character. Then I made a quick Batch file (I was using DOS at the time) to do it in one fell swoop.

There's a problem with this method though, that the monsters on the maps remains there. If the maps is swarmed with monsters in the last save then it will be the same when you restart which is not very good for starter, and you cannot just clear all the save files.

I ended up reinstall the game and make a backup of the entire folder before character creation.
I have tried editing the player file, uninstalling the game (including telling the uninstaller to destroy my save files) and reinstalling, but all to no avail. I still cannot delete my old save and I am stuck with little gold or food. What am I supposed to do next?
I have the same problem. I even deleted and re-installed the game only to find that save game still there.

Find the save file called PLAYER, open it up in notepad, delete everything inside the file, save the file, make sure Windows is reporting it as 0 bytes in size, start the game again.
Thanks. I'll give that a try.
I think they may have updated the package because these instructions aren't working.

I have a zero-byte "PLAYER" file in GOG Games/Ultima Trilogy/ULTIMA2, and it says "WRONG DISK" for both making a new character and continuing. Just deleting the file gives me the same thing, too.
How is this done for a Mac? I cannot find the file described.

You'll find the OS X save in ~/Library/Application Support/Boxer/Gamebox States/

Go there and into the appropriate game folder, then right click the .boxerstate and choose Show Package Contents. You'll then see the file there. Clear the contents with TextEdit (right-click, Open With).

That worked. Many thanks for your help!
Digging up! :)

The best solution I think is to apply fan patch from Exodus Project

To do it you will also need THIS file. Unzip it. It contains two folders BIN and MANIFEST. Copy files from those folders into Ultima 2 directory and then apply the patch according to its Readme.txt.

In DosBox configureation file make sure to set cycles to about 4000 instead of 300.
Now you can use program u2reset.exe to... reset character and monsters on the map. I've just put the line u2reset to configuration file under [autoexec] line and hash (#) it. When I need to use it just unhash it and run the game shortcut. And then hash it again :)
