Is it completely better than the first version, or are there some things that the original is better at than Gold Edition?

The Gold Edition has pre-installed a patch that fixes many bugs/plot holes of the game and changed many of the game's mechanics to be closer to with what players wanted, and the Gold Edition also has pre-installed a speech pack for the titans' voices.
Most users appreciate hearing the titans speak. If you would prefer to read what the titans say instead of hearing them speak, then you can just deactivate "Sound FX" in the game.
You can read about the changes to the game that the patch implemented by going on Google and searching for "Ultima 8 patch." You can then follow links to the original text file that came with the patch to learn what changed when the patch was installed.
A large majority of the players prefer the patched version of Ultima 8 as opposed to the unpatched version of Ultima 8.
