I heard a long time ago that this game exists. Perhaps it's an extra with the "Ultima 1+2+3" download?
I believe it was sold with a CD copy of the Ultima Collection

Google Akalabeth, it's pretty easy to find.
Alkalabeth can not be obtained through GoG, and is still held by Richard Garriot as opposed to EA. He actually made an iOS port a while back, which in turn also circumnavigated the need to type in every single movement control. Beware though my friend, this game is not for the faint of heart, and it's really not that interesting at all. Basic dungeon crawl and food-eating simulator.
I think I'd just like to try it out, at least. I did find this:

A good place to get it? Please LMK.

That'll work for the DOS version. I'd suggest Googling around for the Apple II version though. Of course, if you aren't comfortable with emulators, it may be best to just follow the guide you found.
How is the DOS version different from the Apple II version?

If I remember correctly, the DOS version randomly generates the dungeons EACH TIME you enter them. The Apple II version doesn't.

This is incorrect, the dungeon layouts are determined by the seed number you give the game during character creation. I believe the game calls it "Your Lucky Number" or some such. . .

As for the differences between the two versions- the ones I'm most aware of is the addition of music and the ability to save/load in the Ultima Collection version.

So both the DOS and Apple II versions have don't have the music and the ability to save/load, just the Ulitma Collection one?

I don't believe a D.O.S. version existed prior to the one in the Ultima Collection. But yes- if you want music and a save/load system you need to get that version.

Edit
I checked out the link you posted earlier to see if it was the official version or one of the remakes and I couldn't get it to let me download without a "donation". . . Experience tells me that's not sign for a site like that! There better, and safer, ways to obtain the game- let me know if you need help with this.
