So yeah, I'm posting this here, in the hopes that a GOG employee will read it. I currently have all of the shortcuts to my GOG games in a folder, where I have all of the "gfw_high" icons set to them. I noticed this with Ultima Underworld 1 and 2, but for some reason, it bothers me more with 5 and 6 that the high-res icon is not the original box art. They're just generic boxes that don't fit in with the rest of the series. I'm kind of hoping that we can do a friendly petition to get the proper box arts in the collection, and even better for UU1 and UU2, as well. Anybody else share this feeling?
Seriously? No one feels the same?
You're not the only one, but I'm more curious about why GOG didn't use the actual covers than I am pushing to get them added to the download just now. Though I have been trying to make my own GOG-style icons for V and VI at least...

I guess I just don't get why they didn't make them in the first place. Every individual game on the catalogue has its own unique box art icon, even each game in the Might & Magic six pack. What's even stranger is that the first trilogy of Ultima games got them, and so did IV in the free release (I don't know if it did in the pack, because I opted not to install it alongside the others).

It didn't, but that's a matter of little consequence; you can always download the free release for its icon and use that instead.
I figured as much.
It would be nice to have those icons, but the IV,V, and VI that I had most recently (and still have in storage) which became my only copies of IV, V, and VI after I sold my Apple II with all the software including II, III, and IV. (bad move but I was desperate to sell it to save money for an AT (so I could play VI, ironically)). I did buy VI, but I loaned it out to a friend who moved out of town and forgot to return it, so I replaced the whole thing with a I-VI disc with only a pathetic monochrome label done on dot matrix style which came with five other assorted games, most of which were quite forgettable. This was back when Software Toolworks was releasing Ultima before EA got a hold of Origin. Of course the disc set had virtually no box artwork. Compared to that, the uniform IV, V,and VI icons are not that bad.
Note: The Ultima I-VI disc was legitimate, but Software Toolworks did not like to really spend money on boxes or docs. The docs were .txt files on the discs, and they were sadly lacking. Compare that to the .pdf photographic copies we have with the set and you'll see the cover art is not really a problem. I would like them to look more like the boxes, however, or at least include the box artwork somewhere in the package.
I'd like to BUMP this thread, so that maybe someone will see this and can shed some light on it.
Can't you just make your own?

How would I do that?

Find some good box scans (at a proper resolution) and convert them to icon files with something like http://www.convertico.com/

Does it give you the option of adding that filter effect with the shine on it? Because it's important to me, as it keeps them uniform.

Well, you'd have to add the shine yourself. I'm sure if you ask the GOG team nicely they'll give you a template. :P
Or ask Google for help...
I did that and found this site:
http://www.sircabirus.com/pages/icons.html
I often create my own icons using IcoFX. http://icofx.ro/
It's a free and easy to use program.
Use Google image search to find a suitable picture.

Edit: Make sure you use google.com (English) and not some localized Google website to ensure getting the most hits.

Optimal is a picture with at least 256*256 pixels in size. With Firefox you can just drag&drop the picture from your browser to your desktop.
Open IcoFx and drag&drop the picture back into IcoFX.
A new image dialog will open.
Ensure"True Color + Alpha Channel (32 bits)" and Size 256 x 256 are selected before you proceed.
Next you have to make the picture fit the icon size. Just go with "resize the image" for now.
Close the dialog with OK then save your new icon with Ctrl+S

Here some of the icons I did with that tool
