Hello, I just purchased Ultima 7 from GOG and I was super excited but trying it out in DOSbox or Exult resulted it the gameplay being "choppy" (think it was better in Exult but I heard that has bugs that can make the game unplayable which scared me away)

Anyone have any idea what would cause the game to feel unresponsive/choppy? Like when I tried to move my character would move very slow and delayed with keyboard and/or mouse movement.

I'm running Win7 with a quad core if that factors into the equation anyhow. I really want to play this awesome game so any help would be appreciated.
;( Nobody loves me. I want to play but still having no luck with getting it running properly.
Have you tried different options for the graphics setup?

I run ddraw and it runs smoothly. Well, as smooth as Ultima 7 can run, the game is naturally slighly jerky. Search Youtube for some clips and see if that is what you are experiencing or if it is something different.
I think you may be confusing the natural way the game originally played. If you just right click you'll only take a single step. If you want to keep walking then you have to hold down the right mouse button and you will walk towards it. You can also right-double-click to move to a spot.

The movement is very stilted, as you mentioned Exult does indeed have an option to smooth out the movement. It also has some nice features like higher quality sound and such. There are very recent builds available if you run a snapshot. Just make sure to save frequently.

But for such an old game, it is truly fantastic, and is worth getting used to. Try some of the smoothing modes to make the text more readable and give yourself some time to adjust, this game is a must play.

Also make sure you download your bonus goodies, there are some handy quick reference cards available and also the manual which is written in character. There is also a hint guide.

Can I use Exult with the U7 from GOG? I'd like to smooth out the movement.
I've tried several different graphics options but they all look blurry.

Is there any particular setup that works best?

I use ddraw and hq2x and that looks pretty good. Try using the normal option in the advanced options under graphics settings to get it to look like it would in the originals.

Keep in mind that the normal resolution for the game is like 320 x 200 or something like that so looking at it on modern monitors you are never going to get it to look crystal clear.
Compared to the gameplay videos that exist online using Exult or DOSbox my game just seems laggy in general and even when choosing dialogue options.

Did you try changing CPU settings for dosbox?

Exult is a completely new engine, so if the exact same sluggishness happened there, it would suggest something outside of U7 might be to blame. If you do use Exult, try one of the snapshot releases, not the 1.4.9 release. There is a pretty nasty bug, yes, but it should still be possible to play through the game just fine. Always keep a few different save files so you can revert to an old one if you need to. I played through all of Serpent Isle recently in Exult and never noticed any problem.
