The main download link gives a very bare bones copy of Akalabeth; it starts with some garbage characters and then drops into pick your lucky number. No color, no sound.

In the bonus downloads are three items that don't have their titles set properly; they're listed as Product_Bonus_#####. If you download these they'll resolve as the Windows, Mac, and Linux installers for the 1998 version of Akalabeth, which is the official DOS port of the Apple II version which has color and MIDI music and the aforementioned save feature (though I wasn't able to figure out the hotkey to do so and the included manual is still the original manual).

My guess is the main game is the unofficial DOS port (it runs under DosBox).

Ctrl+S for Save, Ctrl+R for Restore (on OS X it's probably Option or something instead of Ctrl).
lol im subbed to your YT channel Atticus.
Ya the main is one the old copys that didn't have saving in it
The bonus copy is from The Ultima Collection that has saving aka 1998 copy

So hopefully that may help someone who is confused

Am enjoying the 1998 copy more music helps + saving

and ya Arkose is right ctrl+s saves and have no problems reloading from main menu after

Oddly tho I can't go to the settings in the gog folder and tell it open in window mode it keeps saying "isn't installed"
so been having to Alt+Enter each time

Also funny to see a sub on gog Sorcery :P

That's because you're not passing the necessary arguments to the configuration program so it doesn't know which game you're trying to configure.

If that sentence didn't mean anything to you, use the start menu shortcut to the configuration program and it should work.
One piece of advice, don't run this with
./start.sh &
when playing on Linux. It will ignore some of your keyboard input, notably the number keys; you'll need them ;-)
