Got in the mood for some tactical goodness and didn't feel like playing ET or Jagged Alliance 2, so I decided to give Aftermath another chance (at the very least, it is a damned fine SG-1 game :p)
Unfortunately, the startup movies are very choppy and I suspect the gameplay would be as well (haven't tested that yet).
I suspect I already know the problem: It is trying to run at 75 Hz while my monitor is 60 Hz. Unfortunately, I can't change this because whenever I try to test the settings in the configuration program (which seems to be required to save the settings, the program crashes with the following
Application crashed: access violation reading from address 0x0000000c!
SymInit search path: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\UFO Aftermath
SymGetSymFromAddr:487, addr:0x004194f0
(...)
StackWalk:6
the (...) are a few more lines of the SymGetSym crap which I am sure is useless for almost everyone :p
Any tips? I tried to find the settings manually, but I can't find any files in the install directory that reference refresh rate or resolution.
And I am running Win7 64-bits.
Thanks.

Have you tried to right click the .exe that fires up the configuration tool and run as admin ?
I would also tick the 'run as admin' checkbox on the game's shortcut.
Good call on the admin. I always forget to bother since I kill UAC, but that is because I forget that it does magic stuff :p
That being said, the configuration tool no longer crashes, but it doesn't seem to save the settings. And admin'ing the game has the same results as not admin'ing it.
Well, at least it got a little better ;)
As for not saving the settings,
is there a save settings button that you're forgetting to hit ? Do you know where the config file that stores those settings is located ?

I have tried hitting Okay, and I have tried just running from the Configuration proggy. No sign of an actual save settings button. At first I thought it was whining because I never tested (Since I couldn't :p), but that isn't the case it seems.
And the first thing I did was look for the config file. Only file I can find that even might be close to the right one doesn't mention resolution or refresh rate.
Is strange, to say the least.

What is the setting you're trying to change in the config proggy ? Is it actually a setting for refresh rate ?
Also, sometimes the config files are stored in the Documents folder on even on the C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\ folder.
If the config file really isn't in the game folder maybe it's in one of those locations...
Do you have your folder 'view' options set to show hidden files, folders and drives ?
EDIT:
Also, check this here.
There's a possibility the config file isn't being created by the config proggy. If that's the case you could try to create it yourself, from that linked post, or open a new thread here asking if someone who has the gog version of Aftermath can post the content of their config file. I would, except i don't have it...yet ;)

Good call. For some reason I thought they would actually have entries. Instead, we just get a generic integer that represents the video mode :p
KEY "video_mode" INT 88
I used the above line from the link and now my videos work. Everything else hinky as hell (really buggered color, and I think I may need to set the gamma manually, since the 0 in my .cfg might be the cause), but the performance is a lot better :p.
I'll do some more fiddling and try to find a good set of default values so that anyone else with this issue has a .cfg to just paste in.
Thanks.

No problem . I'm glad it worked ;)
I'm having a similar problem, only with XP- The refresh rate is defaulting to 200 Hz and my laptop monitor doesn't go nearly that high.
Same symptoms, choppy video, crash when starting new game or the config file.
"The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". "
I've looked for the config file as well where you have said, but I can't find it- Any suggestions? Thanks!

The problem is that the config.cfg file doesn't get created, right ? If so,
this is the content of the config file as posted in the thread i linked to in my previous post.
#!TXT#CFG_FILE#
STRUCT "root"
KEY "systeminfo" BOOL TRUE
KEY "nosound" BOOL FALSE
KEY "stencil" BOOL TRUE
KEY "use_safe_refresh" BOOL FALSE
KEY "force_texs_mutable" BOOL FALSE
KEY "video_mode" INT 88
KEY "va_main_buff_size" INT 0
KEY "force_old_va_mode" BOOL FALSE
KEY "fragm_progs" BOOL TRUE
KEY "vert_progs" BOOL TRUE
KEY "colors32b" BOOL FALSE
KEY "eax" BOOL FALSE
KEY "soundVolume" FLOAT 1
KEY "speechVolume" FLOAT 1KEY "musicVolume" FLOAT 0.6
END_OF_STRUCT "root"
Copy that block of text above, paste it in Notepad, chose save as, change the save type from 'text files' to 'all files', and save it as config.cfg. Then place the config.cfg file you created in your game folder.
If that doesn't work, open a new thread asking if someone can paste the content of their config.cfg file.
Just be warned that you may have to fiddle around with it to get the settings you want. I eventually gave up and just started playing it on my laptop (where the settings seem to have different meanings :p). Ironically, my laptop also runs 64-bit Win7. Go figure.

This sounds a bit like my problem, which was that I got about one second of the intro movie before it stopped, and I had to press esc to get the game loading. Videos in the game was also sluggish.
After spending a good deal of hours fiddling with everything from configuration to replacing dll's, I finally found that on my system the graphic settings was to turn Vertical Refresh off, unless the application requested it on. After changing this to turn Vertical Refresh on by default, the videos run perfectly smooth.
Thanks Namur- I Pasted it in and it's made a difference, I'll just have to mess with it a bit to get the correct resolution. I appreciate the help a great deal-
I also had to enable vertical refresh; after that the videos ran fine.

How are you guys enabling vertical refresh? I don't see anything for it in the game/config program. I'm having the problem of the movies freezing as well and have to hit esc to skip them. Other than that the game runs fine (some minor graphics issues but hey, I only paid $3 for this game, I'm not gonna bitch too much).
