just loaded up Tyrian for some shmup goodness. the game "detected christmas" and asked if i want christmas mode enabled.. yes, obviously. result? bullets now candycanes. XD

to be still surprised by games this old is a festivus miracle.
Raptor has a similar thing, with extra lizards and rock-throwing monkeys and space aliens and cows that shoot lasers. I don't remember if it activates on christmas, but it does activate on a couple of the programmers' birthdays.

I love these random extra "bonus" things, even though they're a relic of a bygone era of software programming... like the flight simulator easter egg hidden in Excel '97.
I was was playing this over the holidays and I got surprised by the Xmas mode too, but the biggest shock of all was finding out how good this game is. I wasn't expecting much from it but this really is an excellent shmup!

I played this as kid and imagine reaction of little boy when one of his favorite games became "special" for christmas. That was so much fun, i did even called parents to see what happened. Gosh, because of this thread i need to redownload this game... ;)

Whatever happened to proper Easter Eggs in software? Hardly see them at all anymore - the nearest you get are snowmen in Just Cause 2!
