I installed the Gog version of this game (my first GOG install, actually) and everything seems to play fine, but the one big issue I'm having with it is that the music is all screwed up - it doesn't sound at all like the songs do in the included MP3s or the Youtube videos of the soundtrack.

The notes/melodies are correct for the most part it seems, but the problem with it is that the instruments/samples sound completely different and not nearly as good as usual.

Any idea what might be causing this?

I presume you are using MIDI? In which case a decent soundfont setup (or hardware) is want you want.

I'm a little confused... "Using" MIDI? I thought MIDI was just a filetype/audio format for sound, it's news to me it's something you have to set/enable or "use".

The posts in that thread you linked don't really help either, they talk like midi IS what I want, which is the opposite of how you're making it sound. They also say it's a setting of some sort, but I don't see an option for that in the Tyrian menu..?

(Sorry for my newbish-ness, I don't really know anything about PC games or the way they work)

Yeah, "using MIDI" as in you have the game set to output the music using General MIDI vs e.g. SB-16 AWE (before you ask "you" being GOG if you haven't changed the default). I only checked the Windows installer, but I'm assuming OS X is configured the same for this. Not that you mentioned your OS.

It should be a separate shortcut to launch the Tyrian setup.exe utility. If you are going to use MIDI (which I would actually suggest btw) you either need hardware, which means you have to buy it, or use a quality soundfont and MIDI software to use it. See here for a better explanation than I could give.
