OK, so I managed to finally see the dialogue and try to move the game forward. So I am skipping through the conversation since I can read faster and after a couple of presses of the Action key, this doesn't matter whether I use the default (A) or map the key to something else like the Spacebar, it stops resposnding usually around "And we can now kick back and enjoy our retirement".

All I get is the blinking down arrow and the game will not advance because I can't advance the dialog. I've tried everything: running in the various compatibility modes, running as admin, not running as admin, disabling desktop composition, disabling visual effects, disabling scaling on high DPI. You name it I tried it.

Win 7 SP1 Starter 32-bit

Has anyone else had this problem or do I just need to burn this damn useless netbook?

And yes, I know I need to get a "real PC" but they don't exactly grow on trees around here.

Not sure this will help you but here is my install steps that worked for me on a Win 7 Pro PC:

1) Download the DirectX End-User Runtimes. Create a directory to unzip to as that is all the file does. After it unzips, go to the directx directory you created and run the directxsetup.exe as an administrator. Seems Win 7 is missing / requiring some of these files??

2)Create a directory on C:\ . . . I named mine C:\Games

3) Run the Treasure setup.exe as an admin ( Right click the exe file and click "Run as an administrator" on the resulting dialog.

4) On the first dialog of the GOG setup, press the Options button in the lower left corner and using the browse button . . point the install to the new Games directory or the one you created. Install.

5) After install. right-click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark the Run this program in compatibility for" box and set it to Windows 95 compatibility. You might try different compatibility modes but the Win 95 (so far) stopped the freeze-ups for me.

On the same Compatibility tab, under the Privilege Level, check-mark the "Run this program as an administrator" check-box. Close the properties dialog and fire it up.

Hope it helps =)

Edit: I think different systems may work better using different compatibility modes or some may not require any compatibility. Trial and error it seems.

1. Did that

2. Did that

3. Did that

4. Did that

5. Did all of the compatibility modes

And this was before I even made the post here and I still get the problem where the Action key, regardless of which key I bind it to, stops responding.
Bummer, only other suggestions I have is to make sure you have the latest video drivers and to check your netbook manufactures website for a keyboard driver update for your particular netbook. It's a fun game, shame it so difficult to get running .. .=)

Edit 2: Works with my XBox USB controller. Had to remap buttons in setup after selecting Joypad. I was missing the jump button but remapping fixed that problem.

You've probably done this but I will add a link to the info page on changing font sizes on Win 7 as well

The only other font option I get is make the fonts Medium 125%. The default is smaller 100%. I even went ahead and installed the Smalle font file included with the game and that didn't help much.

Also, I don't own an Xbox so I don't have access to a controller for one :D.

I'm on windows XP and I'm getting pretty much the same problem. During the intro scene when the trio are in the boat in a storm with the sepia filter, the text stops advancing. For me its when I reach "These items don't have any actual magical power.", which is shortly after the point where Judaslscariot is getting his stoppage.
I know this may be really stupid and I doubt it will help however I dont use the A key to advance text I use the Z key and I have no problems, Im also using win7 running as admin etc.
That is not working at all I'm afraid.

I would recommend sending GOG a support ticket for this exact issue especially considering that it happens even on Windows XP. I just sent one describing this exact problem on my OS/netbook setup.

Since you are running a netbook with Win 7 Starter edition, it is very likely the culprit of your situation. Win 7 starter edition lacks so many features an OS should have. In the development stage there was an idea to limit the amount of running applications to 3! Luckily it didn't happen.

Still, try installing the game into a different directory than Program Files.

Installed to C:\Games...and turned off UAC as per the instructions on the tech support page :D.

I am also in the process of upgrading to a real Windows 7 install which will be Home Ultimate(I used the upgrade checker from MS to check which one I can go for just to be sure) and will try this again.

Since Treasure Adventure Game is actually a new game could it be possible that it needs the .net runtimes installed as well as the directx runtimes? Just a thought.

Edit: The reason I'm asking is that I have .net framework 4.0 and below installed and the game seems to be running great.

I ran Windows Update and it downloaded and installed all the .NET runtimes including 4.0 I believe and I still get the Action key not responding issue.

Have you tried binding the action key to another key? (run the setup.exe and press the action button, enter new key) Possibly a conflict with the A key that may not happen with another key bound to Action.

Laptops and Netbooks can have some strange keyboard drivers so it may be worth a try.

Edit: Have you tried disconnecting from the internet and disabling your firewall and AV? My Comodo firewall is blocking access for my new game installs. Making the game exe a trusted file in Comodo usually fixes that problem though.
