What? No word about this new project yet?

There's a spiritual sequel to Total Annihilation in the works (no, not Supreme Commander).
It's called Planetary Annihilation, it's on Kickstarter right now and it just looks plain awesome! Just look at the trailer!

Yes, it's just a concept trailer, but I hope the finished product will look like this... or even better!

Oh yeah, some of the developers of TA are also working on this!

Check it out:

agree. THIS is the real spiritual sequel rather than Supreme Commander.

I'm a backer! This looks truly awesome. I'm hoping it hits the as-yet-unspecified stretch goal in which single player is added. But first it needs full funding.
Yeah, saw when it came out, already backed.

And I agree... this feels more like TA than Supreme Commander (sorry Chris Taylor -- I like all your games in general, but none felt as good for me as TA)

I haven't seen enough to justify such a bold statement, all I can see there is lego TA - there's very little to go on at the moment. SC certainly has a few flaws, but it also made some much needed improvements. Transport drops\ghetto gunships weren't a viable tactic in TA, for example. Or changing a build queue without deleting the whole thing.

Putting aside the UI and redundant units, TA had some hilariously bad balance issues - like the AA units (Slasher\Samson) dominating T1 land wars, or Hawk\Vamp spam being effective against virtually everything on the ground as well as other aircraft.
"Lego" is just a general graphical feeling to us, not "Spiritual". According to the official annoucement, most of the makers of the team come from the team of original TA, Supreme Commander and C&C, and they are all TA fans.
BTW, even the voice actor of this teaser is also from TA.

Of course, but it looks like they took the style straight from MNC. The different zones of combat will have little interaction which makes it sound like a half-assed execution of a good idea. Something like the Galactic War setup from Boneyards would sell me more on the title than what's being planned now.

By that definition, Petroglyph is Westwood (I doubt even Frank Klepacki would claim that). I would say with this kind of project especially, that team leaders (the Brian Fargos of the gaming world) and good management is just as important as hiring the animations guy from TA. I have my doubts about an RTS being made for ~$900k that will offer a noticeable step-up from Total Annihilation. I'm only expecting Wasteland 2 to be around a similar level as Fallout 1 but with some more content (and that's on a $3 million budget).
Planetary Annihilation is a multiplayer-only game, at least it was so announced so far, which is why it's budget won't be too much. The funding at Kickstarter is still rising, i fancy finally a 1.3 million fund wont be a problem.
I'm dying to see Wasteland 2 too. :)

Hmm...I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens, but I can't see it having a lot of life without at least some modding tools and more than one gameplay mode\victory condition.
What's the deal with everyone saying Surpeme Commander didn't live up to TA? How did it not? Keep in mind, I'm pretending that the second one, you know, the one that pissed away just about everything the first game had going for while offering nothing new, didn't actually happen.

How did the first SC not live up to Total Annihilation?

I personally see Planetary Annihilation being the spiritual successor to both Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander.

I'm with you, I liked SC/SC:FA. It encouraged the scope of TA just fine. I also enjoyed SC2, though it didn't seem like a successor. It did add a research tree, so it's not like there was nothing new.
I wonder if Planetary Annihilation is the reason GOG cooked up 50% off on Total Annihilation while the hype is up.

Still got quite a healthy MP community too, I see hundreds of players on FAF during the evenings\weekends. Probably some more on Steam as well.
Its not multiplayer only, it will have skirmish as well.
Cheap crap IMO.

Stupid LEGO-styled sandbox for schoolboys' dogfights. Games (at least strategies) with no strong single company don't almost exist for me.

Moreover I observe the following: where developers scream louder "We are spiritual successors" and "Some of us were in team that produced X in Y year" (well, it could be pizza-boy or office cleaning woman) - there we have much more probability to get real shit in the end. A couple of "new" ingredients of dubious quality put in the same old soup.

It's just the same with Master Of Orion fans. They are practically the infinite source of crispy green paper while they're waiting for something to match or to surpass their icon... :)
