Okay, this is slightly heretical, but as someone who never played Total Annihilation (I was always a Westwood groupie, and have only fairly recently spread out) is looking rather ugly now going by the screenshots. Are there any mods out there to improve the graphics at all?
My finger is hovering over the 'buy' button...

I've used it, and can confirm it works perfectly, it uses TA files to render in 3D space.
TA is the first true 3D game, the only reason it doesn't have a 3D interface is because the engine wasn't made for it.

Does this work in single player?
It works singleplayer skirmishes and Multiplayer.
It doesnt have campaigns, that's the only thing it's missing!

That's odd, it says it works in the campaign.

Hmm may have been updated then. I have a version from a few months ago!
Neat, then it has everything you need for a true 3D TA experience! :)
If you haven't already bought it, I would do so and try out a skirmish before downloading the 3d enhancement. I think the graphics hold up pretty well today, they just don't look that great in the screenshots. I have used TA: Spring (another 3d and graphic enhancement) and I prefer to play the game in its original state.

Agreed, once things get moving on screen there's plenty going on to keep your eyes busy. The still images don't really do it justice.
A decent game-play video as a reference.

I might give it a try this weekend. Not sure I have the time free to tackle one of the campaigns, so Skirmish is plenty.
I only installed it this morning and started a quick skirmish map to see if it would work. Ah, it was all coming back to me, queuing orders, slapping down mines and solar panels... until I realised I was building metal makers over the mine locations... ole memory not what it used to be...
TA3D looks a lot worse than the original game, it's something done with love and care but it looks amateurish. Just play it in hi-res on in a window and the game will look ok.
There's a bit of dithering here and there because landscapes where probably in 16bit, but it's understandable and the game has aged very well
TA3D looks pretty bad, in my opinion.
If you want a graphically superior TA then your best bet is Supreme Commander.
But, to me, the original TA doesn't look at all bad once you've cranked up the resolution. I can run the game in the same resolution as my Windows desktop. It's amazing how such an old game fully supported such high resolutions. Especially for widescreen too, which was almost unheard of in games at the time.
TA:Escalation, a very popular and one of only a few active mods for TA, improves the game's look and feel consideribly. You can learn more about ESC here:

Besides the plethora of new units, features, and enhancements you might be especially interested in our new explosions. Take a look at the following video we made recently showcasing them (be sure to view in 720p!) . About 1 minute in you'll be pleasently surprised and we also saved the best for last.

looks very cool but i would be more interested in a mod that improves the graphics without altering gameplay (so no new unofficial units and so on)

Gameplay is largely the same, it is still TA, except unit roles make more sense. Anti-air units now have the role of anti-air, and tanks have the role of main combat units, as opposed to OTA, where anti-air units have the role of anti-everything, and everything else is useless. So instead of building a vehicle factory and clicking on the Slasher a hundred times, you can now think about building some Instigators, Raiders, or even Levelers.

Nice, I'll surely check it out once I complete the original game
