Xoanon: I noticed that the GoG version is 1.0.0, while the one I bought from Runic a couple of years ago is version 1.15. Could this be reason why the mods don't work?
If it's indeed a version difference, and not only something cosmetic (a messed-up display, actually), then I think it could be the problem - as far as I know, no mods were made for the 1.0 version.
I bought the English Torchlight and it says version 1.15 on the title screen. Mods (obviously) doesn't work.
The GOG version is 1.15. That is one of the first things I checked.,and I double checked just now.
The problem is with the GOG exe file. For some reason it crashes when trying to load Torchlight with a mod.
That some people have reported solving the problem by using a cracked TL exe file proves that.

I suspect the problem lies in the way GOG removed the DRM from the .exe, provided they got the original, DRMed version from the dev and removed the protection themselves.
(Now why they didn't just use the retail exe I can't tell, but I guess it has legal reasons if it is indeed so.)
I would be relieved if one of the blue guys acknowledged this problem and confirmed them working on a fix. This shouldn't be brushed aside as a minor issue.
I have very little time to spare (if not, I'd do myself) so I'll suggest something to test, and if somebody dares to try could comment the results. If not, I'll try to test it myself... the next week.

Download the Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx

Run it and exclude every other process than torchlight.exe

You can exclude the registry activity too.

Run the game, and search where it breaks. If there's a error in the location of files, it should be fairly obvious with this tool.

Isn't that what GOG should have done?
Point is we should NOT have to fix the game.GOG or Runic should have done that.
I confirm: every single mod cause Torchlight Gog release to crash: I have both retail version and steam version from 2 years and mod works perfectly.

I have installed gog version on a third pc and i copied the same mod folder: crash!

Only another thing: retail version had no DRM at all, so I don't think that Gog had removed DRM. The only program present in retail version was "encore registation remainder" but isn't a DRM....

It's the weekend so I don't think anyone is working. Come Monday though I expect it will be fixed sometime that day.

I don't really understand why they'd use it, but they appear to have taken the Steam version. You'll note there is a "steam_api.dll" file in there as well. I have to admit that in my mind at least, that file does not belong in any GoG release... Thus I guess it is some sort of DRM version with the DRM disabled in a manner that probably isn't as reliable as it should be given that we're getting crashes from using even the very simplest of mods. (Seriously, I had one that replaced one texture file and the game still crashed just from that...)

I hope they will fix this soon. There are some excellent mods for Torchlight and that's kind of part of what you're buying when you buy the game. Cutting that out is like buying only half the game.
This is the 1.15 version of the game, I thought it was 1.0.0 because it says that on my shelf when I downloaded it. My mistake.

I wouldn't be so sure. It might still use some Securom license files so that you will not have to insert original CD to play the game.

Anyway, it's easy to check, copy the installation folder to another PC and see what happens.

Good news. GOG support told me the issue was temporary and they're working on a fix.

Good news, indeed. Anyone had doubts that GOG will fix this? :)
For now I'm happy enough to sit back and let GOG do their job. They've come across problems with released titles before and they've usually fixed them in a timely manner once they're made aware.

In the mean time it'd be a good opportunity to dig through the plethora of mods this game has in preparation of the fix
