I've played the game enough to get two characters into their 30's, and in the last few levels, have begun crashing regularly. Sometimes every 10 or 15 minutes, sometimes every half hour. But regularly. It's gotten to the point that anytime I kill a boss that gives any fame, or any time I get halfway decent loot, or clear a tough area, I save and come back. And in Torchlight, loading times are long! The game is taking much longer to play now.

Any idea why that might be happening? I've played with my anti-virus, disconnected the internet, closed all other programs, etc. to see if there's some source of interference there, but that doesn't seem to do the trick.

What are your system specs?

Have you installed mods?

It's very strange... Torchlight is a very stable game. I played retail version, steam version, gog version and never experienced a crash on 3 different pc.

Only crash was in gog's first version but was patched immediately.
No mods. Never used the console or installed anything other than what GOG gave me.

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core Duo CPU, P8400 2.26 Ghz
Phoenix BIOS
4 gigs RAM
Connexant sound card
Graphics: GE Force 9800M GTS with 512 RAM
Vid driver version: 8.17.12.5896
Logitech mouse
Logitech G13 gamepad

Only recent change to my system was a java auto-update. That always slows things to a crawl and sometimes freezes programs, but that was days ago and the crashes are still happening now.
Vista is Sp1, Sp2 or "vanilla"?

Have you installed TL in C:\Program Files?

On Vista, expecially on 64 bit pc, installing TL on C:\Program Files can cause problems. Try to install it on C:\GOG Games.

It's SP2.

I put it in D.:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Torchlight

I guess that's functionally the same as putting it in C:\Program Files, right? So I should move it.

Any advice on how to move my characters and their stuff so I don't lose them? Sure is a lot of hours to cancel out.
When you unistall select to keep your save.

However, for security, go to C:\users\[your username]\Appdata\Roaming and copy in a safe location the folder "Runic Games". It's very small.
Thanks for your help. Sorry I forgot to mark this post as a question, or I could star your answer.

No problem! Glad to know that you have solved. If you want, you can rate my post -> the green plus button.

PS: I know that isn't on GOG, but the 20th Semptember (just 2 days) Runic Games will release Torchlight II. If you are interested... see it!
I am, but not with DRM. Guess I'll have to wait a few years.

That's okay though. I've got plenty of GOG games to play, some of which I haven't even startd yet! And I can see I'm going to be playing the first Torchlight for quite a while.

The game was ultra stable for me until I got into my 30's also and whenever I use one of the level 15-30 map scrolls, there is about a 75% chance the game will crash before I complete the scroll dungeon. This really sucks.

When I restart, the game has lost all my progress since the last time. Oh, and you can't use a town portal when in those maps in order to exit to town and save the game, you must complete the dungeon and exit through the end portal or you don't get credit for it.
