I know of (and own, actually) quite a few commercial versions of TR1 devoid of any music. I was wondering about the GOG version, since whether I buy it or not depends entirely on this.

As far as I remember you could rip the music either off the CD (RAW) or with Game Audio Player. I wonder how it is stored in GOG releases.

The Playstation version was the only one with music (except for the title screen music which is in all versions). All others just had ambient sounds during the levels. Here is a discussion about a patch which puts this music in the PC version:

Glidos required... So, am I to understand there's no way to apply that "fix" to the GOG version?

There was, in that thread there is a link to a hex patch. Unfortunately the link is down. And even if it was not down, that hex patch probably was for the regular version of tomb raider without 3d acceleration.

Edit: Take a look at this:

I'm sure a patch for the GOG version can be cobbled together from the collected materials. I can't be arsed to do it at the moment, though. :P

...oh. That was unexpected.
I did try the patch, but it came bundled with an installer, and that version of the game had the horrendous tendency to crash whenever I tried to save/load.

I certainly hope so, it would be a good idea to get in touch with the people responsible for creating those "fixes" (it seems that there's some tinkering with the *.exe involved).

I'm pretty sure the DOS version had music too, if I remember right it used red book audio. I remember putting it in my cd player and listing to the tracks.

It does, but only in the cutscenes. The PS1 version has music during the game, and sometimes even triggered by events like when the T-Rex appears. Here are a few samples:

Edit: And to make the humiliation complete, the PS1 version even has higher quality FMV cutscenes. Still, the PC version has the best in-game graphics.

I can confirm that there is NO music except for the cutscenes in both DOS versions of Tomb Raider (Vanilla and Gold). THe game uses ambient sounds instead, and at times the sounds warn you of coming danger.

I'm guessing you mean the European Sold Out release, where they completely forgot to include the Red Book audio tracks?

That one too, but I also have a version that came attached to some magazine and I'm fairly sure it wasn't the Sold Out release. From what I remember, there was no music in it either.

Out of curiosity I will check my TR1 DOS disc once I get home tomorrow.

Please do.
I didn't know that PC version does not have in-game music at all. I've been reading about it and it seems that the port leave the OST and the high quality videos for the PSX version, as some people have pointed.

I don't care about the videos, but the lack of music is surprisingly depressing; half of the magic atmosphere of the game is lost.

I tried the glidos solution but I'm unable to make it run. It seems that I need the original CD. Sigh.
