I am wondering how faithful Tomb Raider Anniversary is as a modern "remake" of Tomb Raider ? What I really want is to replay Tomb Raider as I played it the first time on the PS1. The PC version isn't as good as the PS1 version in my view, call me a heretic if you will. I'm not even particularly bothered about superior graphics, all I want is to revisit the original PS1 Tomb Raider experience, which means :

1. In-game music. Does Anniversary contain the PS1 music ? I suspect it doesn't. I've read the sticky on how to incorporate the music into the GOG version but it means about as much sense to me as someone blowing a huge raspberry into my ear.

2. Save crystals. This might be an oddball view but I preferred the save crystals as they made the game more challenging and introduced more tension (can I reach the next save crystal this time without dying ?) Does Anniversary have these ?

3. User-friendly controls. Is it easy to use a PlayStation-style controller with Anniversary ?

In short, if I want to re-experience playing the PS1 version of Tomb Raider am I better of with TR1 or Anniversary ? Or should I just buy an old PS1 ?

The levels and objectives are technically the same, but THAT'S IT. After that they are totally different games. I adore them both but the graphics are eons different, the TRA controls employ a mouse/keyboard system and use a "dodge shoot" mechanic for most boss battles. As for music I never have it on and as for save crystals I've only ever played the PC version so I'm no help there. I will say there is a slight difference on the PC save game; TR1 was save anywhere whereas TRA has checkpoints.

You can emulate ps1 games on your PC. PS1 emulators are pretty much perfect or near it... and you can use a PS1 controller plugged into your PC. Obv has to be usb adapted.

Cheers for the helpful info. I may give Anniversary a miss then, though it sounds good in its own right but I'm really looking to re-experience TR1 on the PS1 really. Maybe it's just starry-eyed nostalgia for the PS1 version on my part but I liked everything about it. If you haven't already heard the in-game music (the soundtrack) it's on YouTube : really magical stuff in my opinion. I have the GOG version working and it's "acceptable" but that's not enough for me because I'm spoilt !

This sounds good. I wouldn't mind knowing how to do this. I managed to get the MAME emulator working on an old PC years ago (to play old arcade games) so perhaps with a bit of effort I might be able to understand how to do it. I'm sure it's possible to get the PC version of TR to work pretty much like the PS1 version but it looks like hard work to me.

There is a very nice PC demo for TRA if you are curious (google it). It might take a little while to download but shit, it's free! and it gives you a nice taste of the game. Worst case scenario it doesn't scratch your TR1 itch but it may peak your interest for a new experience all together.
