I was wondering if anyone knows why my copy of thief will not work (Just a note this is not the gog version or gold version
I just thought this would be a good place to start).

What happens is I start the game hit new game skip tutorial and then I can move a bit before the game crashes.This is odd because Thief 2 (gog version) works fine so why does this one not don't they both use the same engine thus same direct x?

No, they probably don't use the same engine, as GOG's version is patched to run on newer systems and also uses the NewDark patch (which relies on DirectX 9).

Install TFix and your version will probably run much better.

I have not downloaded the universal update only the game,is that the patch?

No, you have to download it from the link I posted:

If you install TFix, you don't need the Universal Update, as TFix includes everything you need.

I meant for thief 2,you said that gog patched it is the universal update the one that updates the engine for thief 2?

if you have the GOG version of T2, yes, get the universal update. or even better, get TafferPatcher.

I know but what I mean is originally they both used the dark engine and DeMignon said that the gog version has been
patched to use a new one, but I have not downloaded the universal update so they should still be the same is my question.

voodoo47 is the better one to fill you in on the details, as he's an expert on this topic. However, as far as I know GOG's standard download of Thief 2 is already patched and uses the NewDark engine by default. The Universal Patch just provides further updates and fixes for the already patched version. TFix is a mod that includes all this and further enhancements, like new textures, enhanced water etc.
