Okay, that clears up some of the confusion.

But I'm pretty sure that when I right clicked an unconscious guard it just picked up his body so I could hide him. Does right clicking do both that and looting? And is there some kind of message/alert that tells you whether or not they have something on them?

If you didn't get any loot it means he doesn't have any. Again, you only loot items they have visibly hanging on their belt, even if they are unconscious or dead. This is not a game where you loot every body like in RPGs. If they have loot and you right-click the body you'll hear the looting sound and see the item in the corner of the screen, just like when you pick up an item.

its not like many other games where you kill a baddie and then loot his body for rewards, if thats what you mean. a few guards and such will have a key or a pouch of gold hanging off their belt which you will be able to see. you can sneak grab them, or wait til they are knocked out and then grab them. to do this you centre on the item so that its highlighted and click the use button, the same as with other loot in the game. but 95% of enemies do not have anything on them. you are stealing loot from the world mostly, not as much directly off of people.
