Hello,

I am aware that people who have creative sound cards can use ALchemy to get EAX working. However my current PC has an ASUS Xonar Essence ST, would it be possible to get EAX working with this card?

Thanks in advance.

What was your suggestion? :)
I mixed up the games, thought you were talking about the first installment.

this "might" be a soultion, emulating eax via software ( because there is no alchemy for Asus Xonar), but i didnt try it and im not responsible if your computer catches fire.

lol. Well I'll get the fire extinguisher ready and let you know.

*update*

Downloaded and installed ok, but did not enable the EAX options :( I even tried with the GX setting on in the ASUS audio centre.

What OS are you using?

For Windows 7 64 bit, you want to put this into the use registry path box

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Ion Storm\Thief - Deadly Shadows\ION_ROOT"

The "Wow6432Node" part is the difference between 64 bit systems and 32 bit ones. Also, this forum helped me a lot

Hey thanks for the response, using 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate.

I'll give that a go, but I think it may not work because my card is an Asus Xonar Essence ST rather than a creative EAX one.

What would be really nice if OpenAL was used to simulate the effects, just like Thief 1 & 2

I got it to work on my computer using this solution and I don't have an EAX soundcard either (using Realtek Audio HD). Like Oedi mentioned, the software you downloaded emulates the EAX technology rather than having your soundcard do it directly. I believe this is why version 1.00.08 is in a legally grey area, as Creative wants EAX to be exclusive to their soundcards rather than allowing people to emulate it. The hardest part of getting it to work is the fact that there aren't a lot of good setup guides anywhere online.

Ah I see, well I very much appreciate the help. As you say there aren't a lot of good setup guides online.

I'll give this a try at the first opportunity ;)

Many thanks

Unfortunately that didn't work either. Oh well thanks for the input.

Think my next PC will have a creative card in it.

May I advise heavily against that. I have SB X-Fi, and no game ever has the EAX option choosable for me. Creative is probably the worst offender in not providing support for their hardware past the OS for which they originally released the drivers. They have no moral authority whatsoever to condemn 3rd party attempts to make EAX work in games again. That said, my next sound card will probably be a Xonar.

Yes, I am pleased with the Xonar, just got a bit nostalgic for the impressive hardware sound on Deadly Shadows and also Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

I'll just wait for some kind of emulation to break through.
Greetings

You could give this file a try. The author designed it for TES4: Oblivion though so it might not work:

EAX is no longer available in modern operating systems. The only way it will show up is if it's emulated. This generally occurs by having both a Creative card & using Creative's Alchemy software. If you don't use both it's not likely to work. . .

I have been working on a project that restores 3D positional sound to Thief 1 and 2 on modern versions of Windows if you don't have a Creative card:

http://www.indirectsound.com/

Unfortunately it doesn't emulate EAX yet, but if you have surround speakers you may want to try it out.
