Funny thing: after finishing Thief GOLD I installed Thief II and I had the same mild frame skipping issue as in TG. I edited your enhanced.bat (which fixed this issue in TG) to use thief2.exe and problem solved!

Funny thing 2: using that bat file also activated bloom and post processing which I couldn't get to work in Tafferpatcher (I tried editing ddfix.ini and cam_ext.cfg)!
I'm having a rather annoying problem. Playing the stock version from GOG it plays fine. The max resolution listed is 800x600, but it runs without problems. Well, except the cutscenes don't play.

If I install TGfix then the cutscenes run fine and the menus and such all work correctly, but the game itself just gives me a black screen. Well, more or less. I can still see the sky (or at least a bit of it), the inventory and such is semi-visible, and there's a small block in the upper-left corner that will change and move as I move around. It looks like everything is getting crammed over there or something.

I've tried several different resolutions that work in the stock config to no avail. I've tried installing TGfix without any of the additional patches and it doesn't make a difference. The video card I'm using is integrated though so I don't have access to any settings there to try to fix it. Any idea why it isn't running properly and anything I can do to fix it?

Edit:

After poking around a bit I tried running the "safemode" batch file which just runs the executable with -use_d3d_display. That was good enough to solve the problem. It doesn't even look like it's caused any problems with the graphics.

The only issue is that the walking speed is ridiculously slow. As in it's actually slower than strafing or backpedaling. If I hold down the slow button with it I barely even move. Everything else seems to be at normal speed. Is there any idea of some way to tweak this? Running isn't a solution, but I can't actually sneak up behind moving guards any more because now they move too quickly.

ah yes, intel integrated graphics poking with it's broken drivers again. delete or comment out the multisampletype 8 line in cam_ext.cfg, and you should not need to run in safemode anymore.

as for the controls, quite a few sets are available, try them out, maybe some will suit you better (go to customize controls/load).

Yep, that solved it. Thanks.

It's not the control bindings, it's the actual speed of movement. Run is normal, backpedal is normal, everything is fine except for walk which is just crazily slow. As in, much slower than a version without the patch.

Hello i just bought the game, and i dont know how to start patching the game. How should i start?

And is it possible to use subtitles in this game?
I decided to play Thief with the original textures to start with so I unchecked all the optional parts in the installer, but after installation some textures have incorrect colours, e.g. Garrett's arm and bow (see attachments).

The default GOG.com version works fine but I'd still like to be able to use the improved engine with the original textures. Is there a way to fix this?

short story - everything is working as intended. long story - LGS included two types of textures for some objects (at that time, they weren't sure that all 3d accelerators would be able to handle all formats properly). TFix enables support for the better ones (this has to be done for other things to work properly), which will automatically give you the more colorful textures (they are still original, made by LGS). it should be possible to delete the txt16 folder inside mesh.crf to get the plainer textures back, but don't come back crying if your game goes belly up after doing this.

Thanks, this seems to work fine. :)

Thanks for the explanation too. I didn't realise the textures were actually different, I thought it must be some weird side-effect. Now I know they actually meant for it to look like this I'll definitely give it a go the way they intended. It's great that all that extra work can finally be seen and enjoyed. :)
I'm a little bit confused with all these patches. I thought the GOG version was patched up and made ready to run, using DDFix and no longer requiring the registering of the Indeo video codec to get cutscenes to play. Is this the case?

So, as the GOG Thief installer versions are all still the 1.0 versions, what is the recommended steps to install Thief 1 and Thief 2? And when we get the 2.0 versions, do we have any idea on what changes GOG might be making?

The GOG version will run, just these patches are fan-made additions that are supposed to make it run better. For Thief 1 I installed the fix that voodoo posted on the first page.

For Thief 2 I installed T2 v1.19 and TafferPatcher.
Keep in mind, apparently TGFix with 1.19 for Thief 1 apparently causes some AI, lighting, and pathing issues with the original game. I.E. it converts thief 1 to Thief 2 version of the engine without taking Thief 1 differences into account. So that will have to be figured out and fixed in later versions.

I guess that explains why I can't use too many moss arrows in Thief 1?

The GOG versions have DDfix, which fixes some problems; patch 1.19 fixes everything DDfix did and has many additional improvements (including integrated video decoding--DDfix still relied on the original Indeo codecs). The installation procedure is very simple:

For Thief Gold, install the game followed by TFix.

For Thief II, install the game followed by Tafferpatcher ("TafferPatcher_TMA_207_beta", or whatever is newer by the time you read this).

For both patch installers you can pick and choose the components you want. The installers list some features that aren't necessary (e.g. better textures) so you can uncheck those if you're wanting the purest experience. For Tafferpatcher you want the Patch 1.19 option if nothing else (TFix always installs this).

What about the AI, pathing and lighting issues that Baggins mentioned? Do they cause noticeable effects and problems?

Well people are pointing out some of the more noticeable problems and anomalies here (and looking into solutions);

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733&page=15

Apparently one of the more annoying bits is that the AI in some levels will be able to hear you on any surface, even with moss or carpet. They will come after you. They have become a whole lot more sensitive than they should be. This has made some of the levels somewhat unplayable.

You can get Tfix 1.10 the previous version of TFix here (which in my experience works well for Thief Gold);
http://www.keepofmetalandgold.com/downloads.htm

WIth that version the thief gold engine remains the original engine, and not converted into the Thief 2 engine. So there should be no anomalies.

I haven't read about any anomalies in Thief 2 with 1.19 though. It seems to make the game run as close to vanilla as possible on modern machines with no hitches at all! You might want to at least get the fixed levels for first level, and one of the later levels (these fix some of the treasures that were broken by later 'official' patches), as well as the patched level that fixes the fog in Life of a Party (fog has been broken on that level since original version AFIK?, but the patch at least makes the level as the designers likely intended it to run).

http://saleck.net/creations/gamefixguides/thief2.php#MapFixes

These may be included in Tafferpatcher, I can't remember though.
