after tweaking for one hour and uninstalling the game 4 time, i still cant manage to run the video.

i have done every possible methods discusses here. the .dll file is registerd properly. i ran the game on admin mode. no result.

tried ddfix. no result.

my config is win 7 64 bit with core i7 and geforce 580. is there any other way? i am eagerly waiting to play the game properly.

and many thanks to the contributors here.

hucklebarry: hmmmm... I understand GoG wants to keep the game as close to the original as possible... but the widescreen fix and other DDFix corrections aren't really changing the game. The goals and accomplishments of those utilities seem to line up directly with the goal of making the game run on current hardware. There is nothing game changing about them.

Worst case scenario, I think that DDFIX and the correct DDFIX .exe for Thief should be in the "goodies" available for optional download... but really I had expected these to be built into the game GoG released.

I would like to highly suggest that utilities that affect current hardware (such as resolution and cutscene issues, etc) get added to the download list. It just doesn't seem right to have to leave the GoG site to get widescreen support. There just aren't many "modern" or "current" monitors that can do much at 1024x768.
Feel free to wish for an entirely different standard, but I'm curious as to where this "expectation" about the "proper" contents of a GOG release comes from. The explicit goal of GOG as a service has always been to make the regular un-modded plain old version of the game in question running on modern operating systems - nothing more, nothing less. While a lot of user-created stuff do work with many of GOG's releases, our beloved Polish pranksters are not in the business of adding entirely unofficial and unsupported mod content to the products (and whether it significantly adds or detracts from the game experience is neither here nor there in this regard, especially from a legal standpoint).

haydenaurion: I have Windows XP and the latest driver for an ATI Radeon HD 3450, does that mean i'm screwed out of being able to use the one that allows for widescreen resolution support?
removed the original download, I'll cook up a new version that will have support for the dreaded combo.

DDFIx does just that. It makes the game work on lightning fast PCs. without that, you have a game that can't use modern screen resolutions. "modern as in... several years have passed since square monitor resolutions has any value to a PC game. I'm not saying its GoG's responsibility to add functionality... but you and I certainly don't agree on whether they should ignore current tech that already exists to make it happen.

The legal comment is a bit much. The results from DDFix could be accomplished with the in house programmers of GoG.

Thief fans have been rigging their game for over a decade. Its sad that an advertised "Modern" installer is out and it doesn't take into account all the breakthroughs folks have made to make this thing work.

I see your point, and I referenced it in my original comment. I think you are assuming I'm asking for opinionated things like texture updates and reworked architecture... NO, I expect movies to play and my "lightning fast" PC to be able to show in an acceptable resolution. Nothing more.

So please tell me... how would adding content that makes the game playable purely from a support perspective to the extra downloads be a bad thing? How is that wishing for an entirely different standard?

new version is up. modified the readme (as step no. 2 is actually not required for the GOG version), and added the hdradeon+winxp fix (check the readme really carefully).


still needs a decent installer.. there is no such thing as perfection in this world.

while i don't disagree with you entirely, i have to mention that optional stuff like higher resolution support has nothing to do with getting a game to run on a modern system.

older games are expected to have limited resolution support. this is especially true for 2D games that are often hard-coded for a certain resolution. Commandos 3 comes to mind. and the fact that pre-widescreen games do not support aspect ratios beyond 4:3 and 5:4 comes with the turf, so to speak, in the same manner that you can no longer expect new releases to support 4:3 and 5:4 resolutions.

this is gonna shock you but i still use a 4:3 CRT monitor. i bought it several years ago when CRT tech was already on its way out and you had to jump through quite a few hoops to find one, but LCD tech was still not quite up to the same standard.

as long as my CRT monitor is going strong i see no reason to discard it. i love the fact that i can select any resolution up to something 1500ish, at any refresh rate up to 160Hz. there is no such thing as a native resolution.

Fair enough... but could we also assume that older games aren't supposed to support multi-core processors? Many people could be holding out and still happily running XP on a Pentium 4. I think we are likely on the same page, I'm just hoping GoG considers the line for making these games available doesn't have to revolve around avatars and screen savers. When EVERYONE is asking "where are the mods" why not put truly valuable content readily available? Widescreen is a tad more subjective than cut scenes working. I see that, but is still no where near the objectiveness of altering content.... its just making the same game MORE playabale for more people with less after market tweaking required to do so.

Anyway, not a big deal, I just think many were hyped about an easier install for Thief and were mildly disappointed. Doesn't help that the grunt work was already done.

Sorry for the thread hijack. Thanks for making those files available! I've got all the files, but it seems that every time I re-install it takes a different version of tweaking to make it work. So I've never been able to simplify it. So if anyone is needing some of the older fixes, I've likely got them somewhere.

Much obliged friend, though between the Ultima Age of Enlightenment trilogy and a few upcoming XBOX 360 releases, I don't know when i'll get around to playing Thief.

I changed the resolution @ cam.cfg to 1680 1050 after applying DDFix and DDFix for Thief Gold and my game now runs with side borders. Any way of playing with full screen?

If I apply the DarkWidescreen the game does not launch.

Suggestions?

post your full system specs and tell me what exactly you did,step by step. and I'm not quite sure, did you use TGfix or did you just try to install some random ddfix package on your own?


btw, to everybody who has downloaded 1.02 in the last 3 hours-please redownload & repatch, I have forgotten to include something (nothing important, just two small textures, but anyway).

@everybody-if you do not want any graphics enhancements, do not copy over any folders (and EP.crf) from the archive (copy just the files in the root folder) and you are good (basically, this will just install the latest version of ddfix).

I followed the steps from this page: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121449

The only step that i skipped was the Resolution Patch because my game does not launch with it applied.

Changed my resolution to 1680 1050 @ cam.cfg

"game_screen_size 1680 1050"

well, we can do this two ways-you can either post all your cfgs, I'll read through them, hopefully find out what is wrong, and post the corrected files.

or you can just go to the first post of this thread and download TGfix that already has all the required files prepared and ready.

so what'll it be?

Applied the TGFix from the first post and everything works fine now. :D

Don't know what the problem was since i did everything right, only thing i wanted to avoid was to modify the game beyond the resolution stuff, didn't want the enhanced graphics and other stuff, since I managed to avoid that with your help, everything is fine now.
