So I'm doing the famous Shalebridge Cradle level, and very creepy it is. I am worried about what might be a fatal problem though. I have the Sneaky Upgrade installed and have chosen "Assassin" as my difficulty setting. This setting requires you to kill at least 4 opponents. The only opponents I have encountered so far are the former in-patients. As far as I know I have killed all of them now, using holy water and/or fire arrows ; at any rate I have certainly killed more than 4 of them. However, according to my list of goals I have NOT completed the objective "Kill at least 4 opponents". Is this a bug or do these "kills" not count as kills for some reason ? I don't feel I can carry on with the level until I know whether it is possible to complete it. If it's a bug, or if no-one knows the answer, I will simply start the level again on "Thief" difficulty setting (which doesn't require Garrett to kill anyone).

Hmm I don't think you can actually kill (as in, make sure they will never come back) these.

Well I started again on "Thief" difficulty and completed the level, so I no longer need a solution. However, this could cause someone else a problem in the future if, as you say, the inmates can't be killed (though it seemed to me I had killed them, using fire arrows and holy water. At any rate they weren't getting back up).

I am playing Thief 3 with the Sneaky Upgrade and part of this upgrade is a mod called "The Minimal Age". This mod allows you (among other things) to choose a play style. The four play styles are Cut-Purse, Assassin, Thief and Ghost. Each play style requires you to achieve certain objectives to complete a mission. Cut-Purse is insanely difficult and Thief is the easiest. I chose to play Shalebridge Cradle as an Assassin, which requires that you steal 50% of the loot, kill at least 4 opponents, don't get caught and don't allow any bodies to be found. But If you can't actually kill the inmates then it is not possible to complete the Shalebridge Cradle mission using this play style, so leaving the Assassin play style in as an option seems to me like an oversight on the part of the creator of the mod. Not that I'm complaining, though, the mod is great.
Are you playing Thief 3 Gold or the original maps?

In any case it's probably fixable in T3 Gold at least, if Beleg Cúthalion (author of the T3G mod) can find time to look into it. I'll bring it to his attention.

It's Thief Deadly Shadows (GOG version), plus the Sneaky Upgrade mod, with everything turned on, including The Minimalist Age mod. Fantastic game, fantastic mod. I've completed the game now so it's not an issue for me any more, but yes, I think that the Shalebridge Cradle mission may be unfinishable if you play as an Assassin. At least in my experience when you "kill" the in-patients (the undead lunatics) in this mission, the kills don't register as kills, so you need to play on another difficulty setting. Not a game breaker, just a bit annoying and worrying at the time. Kudos to the guys who put the Sneaky Upgrade together, though, and what a GREAT series Thief is !
I had a quick play-through of the Cradle (original, not T3G) as Assassin. It's true that the patients don't count as kills but the staff do - when you go back in time as yourself you can kill them there. And as you get some fire arrows from the morgue it's quite possible to do.

But it's still quite confusing to be told "kill 4 opponents" and then some of them don't count... We'll see if Beleg thinks it's feasible to change it.

I never tried to kill the staff, I sort of assumed I couldn't, because they are almost like holograms ! So the level is finishable as an assassin, then, but (as you just said) the fact that I had been unable to "kill" the lunatics made me start the level again, as I wasn't sure I could complete the mission and I was really enjoying it and didn't want to play any further if I couldn't complete it.

Thanks to Beleg, btw, and the other guys whose work made up the Sneaky Upgrade : a very good game made even better !
