PastramiX: There's no need to manually hex edit the executable; there's already pre-patched versions for ddfix. Here is the link to the .exe for Thief Gold. :)
avatar
cogadh: Unless that was created today, that's not the GOG version of the executable, so it won't work correctly.
So get voodoo's patch. Or just install ddfix yourself.

cogadh: It was a bonehead on my part. My hex editor was displaying the offset base in decimal instead of hex, so when I searched for those offsets, it found a completely different grouping.

shadearg: Cool, glad you got it sorted. I hope this fixes your problem.
If by "fix" you mean "created a whole new bug that prevents the game from working at all, but did make that error message go away" then yes, it fixed it. ;)

Oh snap. Okay, I'll go through the process myself and see if I can replicate it. I need to know the ins and outs to update my guide anyway, so onward I go!

Voodoo's "patch" is just a collection of existing fan hacks for the game, they still need to be manually instlled as if you downloaded them all separately. For ddfix, you will still need to either have an already hacked exe or you will need to hex edit it yourself.

Hold up, I was being a bonehead again. I forgot I had messed with the compatibility settings in an attempt to fix the issue. It was still set for Win 98 compatibility, but when I turned that off, the game works, or at least gets past the original error. GOG also sent me a fixed exe that bypasses the texture check completely and it was also blocked from working by the compatibility settings. Lesson learned: don't mess with the compatibility settings on Thief. Now I'm off to bang on this thing for a while and see if I can break it again.

i'm getting the feeling that the GoG release may be identical to the most recent physical re-release, the Thief Complete Collection or whatever it's called. it contains all 3 Thief games patched to their latest versions, and these editions are usually advertised as XP/Vista-compatible...

I have that exact .exe installed with the DDFix and it works perfectly with the gog version, they should bundle it with the game.

You're not alone. I ran into a problem with the Dark Engine Resolution Patch. It'll take me some time to sift through the TP2 that is responsible for making the offending modifications.

You should be able to use another modified EXE without trouble since it utilizes that same resources that GOG provides. It's probably going to be the simplest and most immediate solution, unfortunately. I prefer to do my own modifications for edification purposes, but I understand why others might not want to bother.

cogadh: We don't just pay for the same broken game that we could find on any number of E-Bay sites or at the local thrift shop, we pay GOG for compatibility. The "About Us" page, point #4 :
4. All games are Vista and XP compatible.
Thanks to our handsome programming team, the classics are now Windows Vista and Windows XP compatible. Now you can use your lightning-fast PC to unleash the full potential of those games you just couldn't play properly on that busted old 386.
Word. Don't forget this, GOG! These games can still be illegally downloaded, so you're providing a service to make these games run with a minimum of effort on our part! (I wouldn't download them illegally, but when I go to Win7 in the next few years, I may stop purchasing too many things here, depending on how this works out. I understand you guys are small, so maybe going to new games will provide time to fix the old ones. IDK)

I wonder if it will solve my Dark Engine Resolution Patch problem.

Edit: I've sent a request to obtain this file from support. I'll report as soon as I am able to test it.

Edit 2: It doesn't fix the DERP problem.

Do you get the same error message as OP or something different?

upon clicking 'Play Mission' the game crashes and says 'Thief:The Dark Project has stopped working' ... just the default pop-up you get when something crashes in windows

Does it happen when clicking 'Intro' on main menu as well?
If so, do you have any codec packs installed?
