OK, I had a chance to read the Game Informer piece on the new Thief. The thing that's troubling me most is this new "Focus" ability. In the article they descrbie a playthrough of a level, and Garrett ends up using Focus a lot. He's snuck into a private room, and uses Focus to magically see which desk drawers contain valuable loot. He's picking a lock and hears a guard coming, so he uses Focus to somehow make the lockpicking much easier and faster. He sees an NPC carefully examining a wall, looking for something, so Garrett activates Focus and can suddenly see a magical rune inscribed in the wall. Garrett gets cornered by a guard, so he uses focus to see weak points on the guard's body, and selects one to attack, crippling the guard so Garrett can get away.

This is not what I like about the Thief games. I like how Garrett doesn't have any supernatural abilities, he's just a regular human who's very skilled at remaining unseen. Stealing stuff in Thief is so satisfying because Garrett accomplishes it with nothing more than his skills, tools, and careful planning. The Focus ability smacks too much of a superhuman power that will make Garrett better than everyone else, which I really don't like.

As for linear levels... the demonstrated gameplay sequence sounds very linear, but it was obviously a demo designed to show some different aspects of gameplay. The devs claim that missions are nonlinear and largely unscripted, so I guess we'll see about that.

There were some other small details that bugged me too... they're apparently toning down the magical elements of the world, which is disappointing because I quite liked how creepy that stuff was in the original games. Also, the premise sounds like a ripoff of Dishonored. There's a despot who's taken control of the city, crushing the populace with his militarized City Watch! There are plague victims everywhere! Dishonored borrowed a lot from the Thief series, to be sure, but at least it had an original world. I guess the new Thief was in development at the same time as Dishonored but it still feels too similar... even the demonstrated level sounds just like the Golden Cat mission from Dishonored.

Oh and all that stuff in the CVG article linked earlier is actually taken from the Game Informer piece. So the stories about losing focus, and having to bring in new producers to avoid a trainwreck. It's their way of justifying the long development time, but that kind of thing rarely bodes well for the game.

And there's no mention whatsoever of who's going to voice Garrett. I know it's a reboot, but I think a lot of fans will be very disappointed with anyone other than Stephen Russel. They might be very disappointed long before that, of course.

aialissa: This anti-everything nowadays is just silly.
When you've been betrayed over and over you start to become suspicious.

This might turn out to be a decent game, but it won't be Thief, except in name.

Yeah the shot you posted from the new Thief was in the Game Informer article. It's odd because I would have thought the levels for the new Thief would have been largely made before Dishonored came out. But maybe not.
I can't really blame EM for this, I mean look at gameinfomer replay video (I would post the link but gog wont let me yet) this is what your average game player is now. They are so use to hand holding they get lost the second they get loose their training wheels. When Thief 4 comes out I just hope they tailored expert for old fans of the series
Honestly guys, I think this is going to be a great game.

I really think the eyeliner will help highlight how EDGY and REAL Garrett is.

Ouch. That's just sad.
Eyeliner may have been smart, even for a guy, if living in a desert with a glaring sun, but for a thief stalking in the night? Not bloody likely.
good thing he is wearing that mask/scarf, at least the lipstick isn't visible.
There's a "first look" article about the new Thief up at Rock, Paper, Shotgun:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/04/first-look-thief/

While I'm still not convinced by the "focus" mechanic, I trust Adam Smith a lot more than I trust anyone at Game Informer, and he seems cautiously optimistic. I don't want to get my hopes up too much, though, as I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed.
He looks like an anarchist.... Do we get to lob a few molotovs into someone's store? Or pelt rocks at the Baron's wagon?
Relax. These are the guys who made Deus Ex 3. It will be good. Even if Garrett decided to go emo.
Deus Ex 3 was wonderful. Ok I think the last few areas of the game were weak. But it really did hearken back to the original Deus Ex in features than the second game did. The stealth was actually pretty well done, despite being in a very different system of stealth.

Actually I hope the game allows for multiple kinds of gameplay... Want to play it traditional, pure stealth, blackjack or silent take downs, good they got you covered.

Want to go out uber violent kill mode? Good they got you covered.

Want to play stealth but make getting into direct action dangerous (like it was in the old games)? Ok the should have that covered as well. Using a starting mode or perhaps a in game checkmark.

Is he now going to be able to wall climb practically everywhere like the assassin's of Assassin's Creed? But also have rope arrows as another way of getting around?

I hope they can have objective choices that require a non-violent approach to the game. Or maybe they can even make some objectives dynamic. If you screw up on some, it would switch to a back up plan. This would lead down a different path in the story. So if you kill, when it says not to, it doesn't just go to game over, but might make the objectives more difficult in the future.
Whelp. Maybe we get lucky and they actually end up trying to stick to a real Thief formula. Doubtful.

And the Builder said, If the foundation is weak [...] you tear it down and begin anew.

When the series as a whole has such strong foundations, though, there won't be much room for excuse in the event of failure.
