Knight for hire - Killing the multitude of bandit gangs at Mount Crane Castle must surely be the hardest bandit battle in the game. Moving into the center of the lower and upper courtyards is a bad idea as they soon surround you and there is no way to escape. It helps to remain near the escape exit and when on the upper level don't try to run down the stairs - jump over the wall. I had to get out a number of times to recover.
Anyone agree with me?
It's tough, but to be honest I always found the prison on Kaer Almult (Skellige) to be one of the hardest bandit fights. It's a perfect funnel trap with dogs to tie you down, foot soldiers to harry and pound you, and loads of archers/crossbowmen to bring you ranged death. On Mont Crane you're not funneled and can fight the battle your way.
On both you just have to use the game limitations - they will not stray too far from their start points. Draw a small group towards you and retreat so you only have to fight them - and repeat.

Yes, if you walk in to the middle of them - you will get swarmed and slaughtered.
Piercing Cold does wonders with crowds as well, to the point I'd almost consider it "cheating", since you basically only have to blast people twice (with the AoE Aard) and most of your human opponents will drop dead on the spot (or be stunned for a possibility to instakill. Only problem are those bothersome archers...
But I agree with the OP, that fight was definitely the hardest for me, a lot of fun nevertheless.

This right here. Draw 3 or 4 at a time, get them between you and their archers and watch them get hit in the back while picking them off. Try finishing those with long reach like axemen or pikemen first is also advised, since they either do heavy damage and/or stagger while not being easily blockable like short swords or clubs.

I would have fought that battle maybe 18 months ago and can no longer remember the details.
January I started playing Fallout 4 with the extension packs. Only recently completed it and started The Witcher again.

Back to Mont Crane Castle. I saw no archers. Just concentrated and attacked the red health bars nearest to me.

I'll echo Piercing Cold's utility for bandit fights. One of the hanses gave me a conniption before I tried Piercing Cold. Even without the AoE mutation to Aard, I had no problems clearing it in one go after activating the new mutation.
Tough, but oh so satisfying when it's over. All those little red dots with black crosses scattered about...
I've changed my mind. A harder battle than Mont Crane Castle I have just completed.
The network of multi level cave passages south of the Palace Gardens housed
the Hanse gang. They simply kept on coming. Eventually I believed they were all accounted for
so I meditated a while as I had no more potions left. On rising they had all come back to life
and I had to face their onslaught again.
As far as bandit fights go sure... but then that was also the intention with the DLC (to give players a challenge). As far as general difficulty goes I rank it very lowly along with many other endgame encounters. When you apply the right oil, drink 2 decoctions and a bunch of potions everything dies easily - even on death march. If archers/crossbowmen are a problem you can simply enchant your armor with the "Deflection" mod.

The hardest fights are (in my opinion) the early fights on death march difficulty. Fighting the specters while escorting the bloody baron or killing hounds of the wild hunt in a tight space (namely the spheres created by Keira Metz) is what has given me the biggest challenge in the past.

I agree. Near the beginning, if I remember correctly, "Jenny o' the woods" was extremely difficult.
for the hard ones i find a spot - under some stairs. up some stairs i can jump across something, . something to screw up the pathfinding for the mobs so ican just sit there cast igni or pop off few dozen rounds on my crossbow til i weed out a few of them
