Any reason not to sell my starting witcher steel sword or armor?

You can sell everything.
just keep in mind to keep GREEN CRAFT.
because you will find an enhanced recipe and you need the Base weapon to craft it :)

This is too late for me. I sold every green sword I had. Now I feel bad.

I don't know english name of each part.
But it should be stuff like: School of viper/snake - bear - griffin
You can't miss them, like Lukas said, background are Green and you can only find them buy buying a "treasure map" who give you a quest.
