Hi Guys,

I had some problems with my windows, I thought I install it new, but I did not mean it to store savegames ..
I thought it's like GTA or FarCry, they are saved online!

What can I do?

if you don't do regular backups, they are lost.
nothing you can do about it i'm afraid

The savegames are in \Users\user\Documents\The Witcher 3, so back them up along with all your other stuff you might still need in the future.

Since I don't know how you reinstalled Windows, it might be possible to recover some files. Unless you formatted your disk, a tool like https://www.piriform.com/recuva could help you to get some data back.

You can also always store files on someone elses computer (=cloud), even if it doesn't happen automatically. There are services like https://spideroak.com/ which allow you to select whatever files (say your savegame folder) and will sync them with their computers (like e.g. Steam does it) and in that case you'd still have a backup too.

Of course, that's why I suggested a way to save your savegames online yourself, like those other games do it automatically.

well, it isn't. like the answers surely tell. did you read them?

if you bump another car while parking... what do you say?
"I thought it had a parking assistant like other cars do?"

Online saves are not the norm. And if the game or platform client shows no option to enable/disable it it's most likely that it stores locally.

But you could tell us at what stage in the game you were. Maybe someone has a savegame close to yours, so you don't have to start from scratch completely.

Use OneDrive and Sync your Documents Folder, that way you'll keep your saves on the Cloud.

Wouldn't be a problem if games had an option where to store save files, i'd rather have them in the game folder on my HDD instead of my systems SSD, older games all had that, why no new ones?
No lost samegames on system re-install, and longer lifetime of SSD.

Dude you can totally specify where your "my documents" folder is located.

Only to a degree. Most programs, games included, specify a default install path of 'Program Files'/'Program Files (x86)', and those paths are protected paths: even if Windows allowed 'My Documents' in there, the folder would be further ghosted to 'ProgramData'.

On NTFS, you can generally move pretty much any file/folder to any location, no matter where the OS/application wants to place it. With NTFS junctions I can have e.g. c:\documents on d:\documents, while every application still thinks it's on c:\, while all the files are actually on d:\.
Often used this in the past when I had small OS partitions to make image creation easier. I simply moved the big folders to other drives, without the OS noticing.
So my point is, if you have a small SSD, you don't have to use it for any of those files, even if the software writes it there by default, because you do have the option to place it wherever regardless, without any software having the option of stopping you to do so. This is around since forever.

That's great... for you. But 99.9% of gamers, especially those who use Galaxy, are not going to know what the hell you're talking about, nor give a fig.
