Hi I'm new to this whole gog thing so if someone could help I'd be very grateful, and sorry if someone has already asked/ answered this... I am currently downloading the main game which states it is version 1.10, there are 2 patches available one which says '1.01+->1.10' and one that says '1.10+->1.21' am I right to assume I only need the second one as the base game I am downloading is already version 1.10?

You can use GOG Galaxy & see all stuff & info about patches on more - extra downloads.
