Why is it that something as simple as separate gamma adjustment for the game window is something CDPR can't seem to figure out in 2016 - where everyone and their pet iguana are using Borderless as the go-to for Fullscreen modes?

The game insists on keeping such a dark overall gamma that even using torches, or cat isn't enough to tell basic features from each other the second it becomes even remotely cloudy or evening dark.

This is the first game in years where I have had to keep my nVidia Desktop Colours Settings window open at all times, so I can adjust it on the fly if I need to alt tab and (gods forbid) look something up on the internet.

And no - Going Fullscreen isn't really a solution, because it slows down the time to tab significantly. You need to take some basic hints from developers like Blizzard, who have no trouble doing any of this.

... preserve system gamma - not enough for your needs?
No - Because the system UI is noticeably brighter than the game in comparison.

Edit: Ended up having to complete the game and both expansions using nVidia gamma. It left the game with an incredibly sad and overexposed visual side, but at least I could navigate the streets and caves...

(Yes - I obviously used cat and torches, neither of which are enough)

Well, you could have set up your gamma in full screen, saved this off, and then go to windowed mode.
The changes in gamma could have survived.

Just a thought because - had been "reported" that Witcher games in general suffer from frequent re-visitations :).
Except no - They wouldn't have "survived". That was one of the first things I tried...
