(Spoilers: All parts associated with this quest.)

I went to the island for the Lord of Undvik quest. Somehow, I ran into Hjalmar before encountering anyone else, except a few sirens. Looking at the quest online, it looks like I should have done much more before meeting Hjalmar.

I went to the cave with Hjalmar, finished the quest, and he is now waiting for me on the beach.

Did I miss anything major to the game, either now or in the future, or can I head back to Skellige to do more quests?

If you had followed your Witcher senses you would have found one of Hjalmar's men, where you could save him from a predicament and he would join you to find Hjalmar. With the Loon (in the giant cage), that would have made three potential survivors. You would have seen more of the island.
