Enhanced recipes (oils or bombs) require the original item in your inventory. How do you craft these if you no longer have the original item, since the recipe disappears and you don't seem to craft them any more?

Once you have made; oils, bombs, potions, decontoctions, you have them forever.

What you do run out of, is the number of times you can use them.

Meditate in the game key letter "N" to replenish your used stock. Just keep the items in your inventory, even if the bottles seem empty, don't throw them away.
If you find a more advanced version of a certain oil or potion, the obsolete one disappears and the only way to make it re-appear in your inventory if you buy the formulae from a merchant or loot it somewhere.

So I need to find the original recipes again? That seems like a bug.

But if I've run out and have the advanced version, my inventory stock isn't replenishing. Meaning I'm not getting the upgraded items either since it requires the original item to make.

It probably is, my suggestion was merely a workaround. Alternatively you can try crafting all the oils in your inventory first before looting any one of the enhanced versions, that is what I did.

You know you must have Alcohest in your inventory to replenish your potions when meditating, right?
I never had a problem with upgrading my potions.

Me either.
I always have alcohol.

I have 2 upgraded items, Hybrid oil and one of the bombs. I cannot make either one, despite having ALL the requirements except the original bomb or oil. Seems silly to me, and the recipe should not replace the original item since I never crafted either item.

Wait a sec!
You HAVE to have the original item to craft the enhanced one.
It's no wonder you can't craft the enhanced one, if you don't have the original to start with! X-D

Exactly. But I never had the opportunity to craft the original items, as I never had all the ingredients. However how am I supposed to get these items now without a recipe to follow? And how would you replenish your stock of enhanced potions/oils/bombs once you run out of the originals? Seems like an ill thought out process to me. How did this get past play testing?

Because you misunderstand how the system works. It's possible to find the recipes for 'Enhanced' or 'Superior' versions of an item before you find the base level one. No recipe replaces that of its lower-level version if you haven't crafted it yet, I think you just haven't found the one you need... Check with alchemy merchants or find them as random loot in containers.

You only have to spend the various crafting reagents one time for each recipe, and you're rewarded with a re-usable item. Bombs and potions have charges that are refilled automatically with alcohol when you meditate, but you always keep the item. The lower-level version is only consumed when you use it in the upgrade recipe (original to make Enhanced, Enhanced to make Superior).

In most cases, if you have both a lower-level and a higher-level recipe, the lower-level recipe only disappears if you have said brew in your inventory. If you don't have the lower one, but have the recipe, the lower-level recipe remains until you have it.

(There is a bug, however, going around, concerning the Northern Wind and Moon Dust bombs; in these cases, the lower-level recipe, at least between normal and Enhanced, seems to take priority.)
I've run into the same thing. I found enhanced dancing star, however had not created the basic dancing star beforehand. The recipe for enhanced wants me to have created the original, however I have no option to do so as the original does not show anywhere.

What you other people are saying is not what I'm talking about either. I know if you make a basic, then an enhanced the basic disappears and you're left with the upper tier. this is not the case. I have not created the basic, the formula for the enhanced wants me to have already created the basic... therefore I cannot make it.

You can find the recipes out of order. It sounds like you never found the original, only the enhanced. Once you find the original recipe, you will be able to make both.

Thanks I hope I didn't already find it. A gross oversight, no doubt :) They just keep popping up it's hard to keep track.
