I know it is kind of annoying ("... who has the biggest...?") question but:

because my video card is outdated
because I do not believe CDPR one bit when it comes to the type of prefered video board
because I constantly read posts of poor souls that try to use a GTX 970 (or the like, even better)
because I mean to purchase a new video board, and
because I do not want to buy anything that is high priced but inferior:

because of all the mentioned points: could somebody be so nice and answer here with
the type of GTX (sorry, only NVidia), and
OK or
BS as comment?

So "GTX 960 >> BS" would be enough to help me find the new card.

Thank you all, maybe other ppl could benefit from this, too...

Most important question: what is your budget?

mmarci: Most important question: what is your budget?
Major preference: if it works...

No, really, I would gladly get a GTX970 if not for all the bug reports with this and similar cards.
Hard to get one that is not factory overclocked, and exactly this seems to be the problem at large.

Currently I run (ruin?) a GTX 580 that runs smoothly enough, only at 90°C all too often.
The second factor is that the next card should be able to handle DX12 and also have significantly more CUDA cores then the GTX 580 (need them for several 3D applications).

EDIT:

before anybody asks: surely, I am able to read card specifics at the NVidia site - sadly they do not say anything about the use of W3 - and if, I perhaps would not believe them :).

He asked you about your budget (money, $, coin). And I have a Zotac GTX 970, which runs the game very good at ultra 1080p.

And I answered truthfully "as long as it works".
Then I expanded this by declaring that even a GTX970 or the like would be bought - if not for the mass of bug reports including this card.

You didn't specify how much money are you willing to spend in a new gpu, but, if you only want to buy an nvidia card and not amd cards, I can only suggest you a 970 or a 980. 760, 770, and 780 are discontinued, so... And 5xx-6xx series will probably become obsolet in the next few years.
It's a problem, that's for sure.Today's best card is tomorrows (Oh,you got one of them
no wonder the game doesn't work).
Just buy the best you can afford and hope it last's a while.

Please, do not get me wrong, but your hints for the 970, etc. are exactly the things that I will get by visiting NVidia.
What I am after, and you have answered that, are first hand insights from using a specific card.
Needless to say - the more answers, the better. So there is hope...

Concerning the amount of money involved - anything in the price range of a 970. So if a 960 (although discontinued) will show up with a majority of "OK", then it will be this card.

As for AMD cards - had one, not an experience that I want to renew.

A bit too much fishing in the dark :).
Seen bug reports involving a Titan X - now what?

Have you considered getting a second 580 and running SLI?
Or maybe get a GTX 970 and use the 580 for PhysX ?

All the latest will have bugs for a while as all games. They are trying to improve
and update too fast without testing,so It's something you have to do some research
on and trust that what you read is true. It's a cut throat market as in all products.

SLI would mean another power unit, more fans - maybe another mother board.
And, normally I am running things like ZBrush, Photoshop, 3DCoat (needs CUDA cores), and some render engines that use the GPU. All of these are doing quite nicely with the 580.
like I said, even W3 runs in a satisfying manner, only the almost permanent 90°C are bothering me. A lot.

Most of the manufacturers built the 970 card without enough cooling.
The 970 Asus Strix and the Gigabyte 970 built enough cooling in.

I run the 970 strix personally, and have played witcher for 10+ hours at a go without any CTD.
hello guys i have a GTX 780TI and no problems
I'd only look for the current generation (Maxwell 2 9xx cards) now since the previous ones don't seem to get as much care anymore (seems like tesselation on 7xx is weaker, even Titan had similar results to the new 960). I wouldn't buy high end cars even if money was no issue just for the lack of support in a year or two - it's better to buy two cheaper cards and as previously suggested use the older one for PhysX. 970 (my Strix for example) runs Witcher pretty nicely. The amount of problems is simply caused by the number of 970 sold, not that the card would be any worse than previous cards.
sli 460s and runs pretty well (hair turned off, rest is mostly high, few ultras)
