After a update the game shortcut is no longer on the desktop. Is this a bug?

Not an issue. Go to your installation folder (..\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\bin\x64\) and right click on 'witcher3.exe', then select 'Send To >> Desktop (Create Shortcut)'. All fixed.
