It looks like the base problem is that the updater is looking in the registry for your copy of the game. If it can't find it, it just fails blindly.

Go to play.thewitcher.com and download the installer. While you're waiting, do the following:

Save the following text as a .reg file (not as a .txt file) in notepad by copying it from here, pasting it into notepad, changing the drive letters to suit your own PC, then saving the file. Use "witcher_fix.reg" as the file name, and select "All files *.*" from the dropdown list below.

Then double-click on the file, accept the registry editor warning and let it update itself. Run the installer and enjoy!

The problem with this and me and a few other people is that we don't have this GOG.com folder, and we are installing them in completely different folders such as me, who has it in E:\\Games\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\

So do the needful and change the registry values to suit your situation.

If you go directly into the registry at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GOG.com\Games\1207664643

(And it will be there because that's added by the system regardless of where you installed)

Then edit the values directly, for example:

LAUNCHCOMMAND
C:\GOG Games\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\\bin\x64\witcher3.exe

Change it to
E:\Games\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\\bin\x64\witcher3.exe

Or use that guys file and set it to
"LAUNCHCOMMAND"="E:\\Games\\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\\bin\\x64\\witcher3.exe "

It's really no different... you're just pointing to where the game or game resources are..

So.. follow that other guy's instructions, create the .reg file like he instructs but change the values to what you have instead. Then double-click the saved .reg file. It will add the registry settings to your registry so that you will have the GoG.com\Games\1207664643 folder in the registry.
Did this, said registry was edited correctly, but when I launch the game it opens for a split second then closes without any warning or anything. Any idea how to fix this?
complete noob here so sorry in advance, but am I supposed to load up the registry after witcher is installed on galaxy, or during installation,

also im using the gog downloader to install witcher 3, do I still have to use this registry fix?

You only need to worry about reg fixes if after installing you have any issues. Wait till it's installed and then if you have trouble, worry about it then.

I've never encountered these gog galaxy errors because I don't have it plain and simple.

You may want to use the old gog downloader if you don't care about achievements and what not. It's simpler and won't force you to pull out your hair.
interesting that you cannot play this game or launch it without gog galaxy being intact. I have also noted that when offline, "gog galaxy has stopped workng" error pops up. with all the Wichter 3 hoopla surrounding this game and it's expansions on Gog for months before it and its expansions were even releaed, I think gog is sneaking a abit of thier own DRM into the dirnk. it'll happen to everything sooner or later. :(
