When the game first launched, it ran surprisingly well on my system. Completely stable.

I came back to it this week (or last week?) and now the game crashes more often than fucking Skyrim, what is up with that?
Well, w/o necessary information like system spec, operating system, etc there won't be anyone able to help you.

AMD FX8350 (4ghz 8-core), 16 gigs ram, 500 gig SSD + 320 gig HDD, AMD Radeon HD 7950

My system is not at fault. Everything is up to date, nothing shows any faults. Unless there's some incompatibility I'm unfamiliar with, but even then that doesn't explain why it was stable months ago but isn't now.

Oh, I should mention that it doesn't crash randomly. It almost always does so in conversations.

Maybe you have the same problem as the guy in this thread. You could try the steps discussed there.
Do you have windows 10? Maybe the game really does have a problem with it in some cases.

No, I'm still running a Windows 7. I have tried reinstalling, but haven't been able to test yet.

That thread doesn't sound like my problem at all. Everything runs fine, game is smooth, will just crash, windows doesn't even notice, can have it back up in ten seconds or so to try again and it probably doesn't crash at the same place. The next conversation however, is still an open question.

Still might be some helpful tipps in this thread, event viewer in particular. Anyway since this happens only in conversation - which are tesselation heavy - try disabling tesselation entirely (I think that needs to be done via an *.ini file) and see if this error persists.
Did you solve this?

Try turning hyperthreading off in bios.

AulisVaara has a AMD CPU, they don't support hyperthreading.

Maybe, haven't been able to test different Tesselation modes. Work tends to get in the way of play time, unfortunately.
I might as well just be that w3 is buggy on your system and there is nothing you can do about it. But you'll see.
There are a lot of recent threads about this, so it seems to be a frequent occurring problem.

I myself have the same problem as well and was looking around for a possible fix. The last time I played the game before this was in August, so a long month before the first expansion released. It worked like a charm and the game never crashed for me. Now I'm finally playing the first expansion and the game just keeps crashing to desktop randomly.

I'm playing it on an Intel i5-4460 with 8gb ram and a GTX960. Since a lot of people have these issues since one of the latest patches with quite different system specs it does seem to be a problem with the latest patch (or one of the latest).

Edit: I read a tip in another topic about disabling Game Overlay for the game in GOG Galaxy. (More -> Configure). Will check out if this fixes it.

Edit 2: Seems to have fixed it.

Also started having this problem after playing like 100 hours. Only thing that (sort of) worked was turning ALL graphics and graphics processing options down to minimums. If you are willing to put up with that, might work. I wasn't.
Turning off tesselation only seemed to make it crash more often, strangely enough.

I'll try that, thanks.

Let us know if it worked for you. After I disabled that the game never crashed for me anymore.
