Hello,

I'm having a big problem with the Witcher 2 (DVD version). I hope I'm allowed to post this here as the official forum is down.

My problem is that I can't start The Witcher 2 after installation. The Launcher won't even start (no error message is displayed...just nothing happening, I tried to uninstall all old "Microsoft Visual C++" versions and installing the ones from the FAQ). I also can't uninstall the game. It behaves as if its uninstalling but it is actually doing nothing...all files are still there and the next time I try to install the game wants to uninstall again. At the end of the uninstallation I get a VERY weird message: "C:\Windows still contains some files. Do you want to delete the directoty and all of its contents?". And I certainly didn't install the game in C:\Windows...not even on the same disk. The only thing I can imagine is that the installation interfered with my Norton Antivirus Suite...but I don't see any way how I can confirm that. Somebody else also posted the same problem (see there: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/975399-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings/59158867 ) and he also has Norton Antivirus.

Please help.
Just one heads up: This is NOT the problem many others have where they click "Lauch game" in the Launcher and then it won't start (changing Desktop resolution seems to be the fix there). In my case not even the Launcher will work. I tried changing the Desktop resolution with no success.

Just in case somebody else has Norton Antivirus...here is the solution that I figured out myself:

1. When installing disable Norton Antivirus.

2. If the game was installed with enabled Norton Antivirus it might happen, that it doesn't work and that you can't uninstall it. In this case open regedit (only do that if you know what it is...you might fry your computer otherwise) and search (CTRL+F) for "witcher".

3. You will find lots of things with switcher (which unfortunately contains witcher)...search until you find Registry entries for The Witcher 2 (to do that repeatedly press F3).

4. Delete them (I actually only deleted the ones in a category called something like Uninstaller).

5. Now you can reinstall The Witcher 2...if you choose the same disk location and so on the installation will actually be really fast. JUST DON'T FORGET TO SWITCH OF NORTON BEFORE DOING THAT!

Hope this helps,

Alexander

Sadly, it does not. A full year has passed, and I have the exact problem that's explained here. I've contacted the Witcher 2 support, and have gotten no reply. I tried installing the digital version, yet it still doesn't work. I've tried a whole bunch of things, like re-installing .NET Framework to renaming a .dll file in Adobe Acrobat, none of which have worked.

I would really, really appreciate a reply. I'm beginning to regret ever having gotten this game.
Good news! After some further research, I found this!

It's a hack that changes the .dll files and some other stuffs. And, best of all, it works! Now I can finally play this!

Hack works great, I can get the game to run now on my XP machine. Not sure how many people get this problem I think it should be a sticky
