Auru: I don't understand the hype for Skyrim, Oblivion was a massive disappointment for me.. game was garbage

i'm not saying The Witcher 2 is perfect, it has it's faults for sure (the UI for one) but it's head and shoulders above pretty much every game i've played this year

Guess i'm hoping i'm wrong and Skyrim turns out to be a good game, the more good games the better right? :P

glosoli: Other than Oblivion, TES games are brilliant. That's a good reason for having great expectations for Skyrim. Also, previews are great.
Yes!!! I seriously want Bethesda to bring in the glory of their earlier TES games.

Auru: Oh I agree, I did enjoy Morrowind for example.. but to go from that to Oblivion... it's like Bioware going from Origins to Dragon Age 2... but worse :z

glosoli: Oblivion is a good game, too. I actually like it but after a masterpiece like Morrowind, ppl expect more. Oblivion's main story is bad but side quests are quite fun especially Dark Brotherhood and Daedric quests.
Dark Brotherhood quests kept me going. I was so bored of same dungeons over and over :/ ... not to mention monsters auto scaling to player level!

So far The Witcher 2 is a contender to the best CRPG game of all time, despite I didn't like boss fights except for Letho. Especially, if they fix bugs and make the interface for shops, crafting and inventory user-friendly.

I'm officially passing the crown of my most favorite game of all time from my previous favorite Planescape: Torment to The Witcher 2.

Oh My! I can never do that! My favorite game crown will always belong to PS: T :)))
Assuming Skyrim will beat it.

Witcher 2 was ambitious and would definitely be a contender though, if it weren't for all it's issues which add up and significantly mar the experience. Talents weren't balanced, Quen is overpowered, bombs/daggers are just plain cheese, the UI is a mess of inconveniences and incomplete/lacking in a number of ways, a lot of arbitrary actions required to do simple things, signs and blocking often simply aren't responsive due to what I'm assuming is animation issues, etc. etc.

Whoa whoa whoa, Witcher 2 is great, but let's not do anything we'll regret. Put down the crown and step away very slowly. Incidentally, the other day I was thinking about how great it would be if CDPR could remake Planescape on their shiny new Red engine. Oh, to traipse around such a world...

Anyway, I'll never understand why people try to compare games that haven't come out. No one knows what Skyrim or Deus Ex will be like outside of promotional hype, so to call them competition just because of their pedigree seems naive. Case in point: I heard the same "game of the year contender" talk about DA2 before it was released. No game company deserves that much slack.

Uns33n: Witcher 2 can very well become the best RPG of 2011! It has already become a game that looks into the future... settings standards for all games to come, especially true for role playing games.

IMHO we are going to have 3 more major contenders and these all come in the form of sequels (just like Witcher) or successors --> Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Skyrim and Dark Souls.
Out of those, not a real question for my personal opinion: one isn't even on pc, one has guns and Skyrim might be another good base for modding, as long as they don't steam-rape it, which makes modding difficult. I read that they want to make ME3 even more of a shooter (contrary to their earlier rpg promises), so that's also out. Don't know what to expect from Risen 2, after Risen was so terrible.

And the winner is... *drumroll*... The Witcher 2.
As I said, personal opinon
(I know that a lot of people like guns, I despise them, so some games are out from the get go, TR and ME being the only exceptions, but just barely).
Skyrim will probably suck even harder than Oblivion did, but that won't prevent millions of fanboys and bought journalists all over the world from voting it game of the year. TW2, as good as it is, is a niche title.
I really can't see Skyrim as a contender for RPG of the year.

I loved Oblivion, but I loved very specific parts of it, and that was despite an incredible amount of very large flaws.

TW2, as a game in general, is incredible.

God I hope we get an expansion, though.

Wow, that's... I dunno, a lot of love being spread around.

I like The Witcher 2 a lot but not THAT much. Not that much by a long shot.

Amazing, considering you haven't played it. Some real ESP you got going there.

I am dead certain I will enjoy Risen 2 more. But until November (Skyrim) or whenever Risen 2 comes out, it's even game of the year for me :)

Yeah you're right, we should never make any predictions about games, ever.

It is going to be a battle of RPG sequels. I have few hopes from Skyrim, mainly because Oblivion was just not good enough (compared to Morrowind). Although, Human Revolution and Dark Souls should come out really good!

For now, Witcher 2 is the King... hopefully will remain so for few years!
Maybe RPG of the year, but like many others, I suspect, I'll wait to see how Skyrim feels. Hopefully more like Morrowind and less like Oblivion but with better combat. I enjoy the witcher but there are many problems and annoyances with it imo. Such as doors, the terrible interface, having to meditate to use a potion, I can rob people's homes with them sitting right there not saying a word, the game itself is FAR to easy even on hard mode, the lame ending, terrible gear progression (draug armor outdated after one battle... nice), taking damage during the cutscene played for a spectacular finisher, etc.

I know this is a witcher 2 forum and all, and I have enjoyed the game, but there are some definite problems with it. The way doors work, having to meditate to use a potion, and *especially* this stupid popup interaction ui element are so irritating as to detract from the entire gameplay experience. Maybe Skyrim will avoid some of these snafus, maybe not. Will be interesting to see.

There is a difference between prediction and prejudgement.
Really don't think Witcher 2 will be even RPG of the year.
I completely loved it but it's certainly not a game for everyone. Most people will enjoy the graphics and maybe the decisions, but there are a lot of things that gamers who don't see "The Witcher" as the story of Geralt wil find very unfulfilling.

Like Letho (trailers make him and Iorveth seem like 2 huge villains) being absent from most of act 2 (only played Roche's path, maybe it changes) and only showing up at the very end of act 3. Or the ending, which many are complaining about but I find it awesome.

And Skyrim? I personally don't like all that kinda pointless free roam (makes me feel kinda like a delivery guy) but people seem to love it.

IMO RPG of the year will be Skyrim and, depending on it's success, even GOTY
