I've just downloaded and installed Witcher 2 and it has defaulted to "low-spec" in the launcher window which is fine.

The cut-scene runs flawlessly. However, as soon as the game starts, it becomes very laggy. Even when I pause the game to view the menu/options, the mouse stutters pretty badly.

I know that my laptop is nearer the minimum requirements but I would have thought it could cope with the game on its lowest settings.

My laptop has an i5-460M processor, 8GB RAM, Nvidia GT-420M Graphics Card and Win 7 x64 OS.

Make sure that SSAO and Anti-Aliasing are DISABLED.

I think your problem is the graphics card.
While your processor and RAM meet minimum system requirements, your GPU does not and this can cause lag.

I've already entered your specs in, you just need to change the dropdown box there from 'recommended' to 'minimum' and it'll show you the correct graph.

Unfortunately, the GT-420M isn't good enough to run the Witcher 2 at min levels.
Hopefully the lag isn't bad enough that you can't still enjoy the game, otherwise you'll probably have to get a new card.

Hi Kerchatin. Thanks for the reply. It looks like I may have to uninstall the game and put it down to experience. It's a shame as I loved Witcher 1 :(

I'm assuming you set it to 'minimum' settings and not 'recommended'?
In any case, there are of course, always many more factors involved than just the CPU, GPU and RAM.
I've been able to reliably run the Witcher 2 on computers that don't meet the min requirements before too, but those 3 factors certainly do play a large part and for most people if they're having a problem like pigdog, it's probably due to those.

With that being said, it's always worth trying out other things. Sometimes one small tweak can make all the difference! :)

The game is very demanding but at the same time is very tweakable, I spend LOTS of hours trying the perfect balance... you should do the same... start removing all kind of effects and enhancements like bloom, AA, SSAO... then get a decent number in the foliage and mesh distances after that lower the textures and so on... all that is in the user ini file in my documents... and last but not least resolution matters a lot... don't play on anything beyond 1280x720... hope it helps.

The weird thing is that the "can I run it" system tool shows that my laptop passes minimum requirements reasonably comfortably.

I have tried turning everything to it's very minimum but it's still unplayable. I uninstalled it in frustration but kind of regret that bearing in mind how long it took to download :(

edit: I run the program as admin and ensure that virus scanners etc. don't interfere with the game. Also, it's installed in C;Gog Games/Games/Witcher 2 folder (not in Program Files x86).

Like Kerchatin said, it is you video card.
It is way down on a GeForce 8800 or a HD3850.
Desktop cards are more powerful than mobile cards & it is the 2nd number that gives a rough idea of performance.
In this case an 8 & in your case a 2.
This will give you a rough idea (hard to get real comparisons from desktop to mobile cards.
