There are a few options people've had success with -

Disable AA (and probably use an outside source of it)

If you can't run regular ubersampling smoothly, open the ini file "user in the config folder in the witcher folder in your documents folder
ctrl+f and search "uber" and change ubersampling to 1 and try that

I use the second method personally - you can sort of still notice the "grid" on some things in some lighting, but barely

Is this any different from activating ubersampling from the options menu?

josh6135: i noticed there is a very faint grid on geralts face and have spotted on triss as well. any idea of how to get rid of this?
I kinda like the dithering detracts from his ugly-ass washed out face!!

Yes, the options menu sets ubersampling to 2, or 0.
Some users have really bad performance with the setting in the options, setting it down to 1 in the ini seems to improve graphics and reduce the "grid" without much performance drop.

I posted it on the steam forums as well, and got a few responses from people who reported it to work better than 0 or 2 ubersampling for them also.

Most games don't use dithering.
It has barely any performance impact.
And for some reason the devs put a sharpening filter over the whole screen which makes the dithering look much worse than it has to.

The problem with turning off sharping in the user.ini is that because (at least for me) AF does not work you end up with blurry textures.
I agree that the grid/stripes are by design. Looks like some stupid, cinematic post processing feature added to make the game look more like a movie, because people think movies look realistic? I tweaked something and I think I got rid of it.

Edit:
Nope, effect is still there. heh, I wish you hadn't reminded me of it, now I can see it in the background of some dialogue too :(

Thanks for the info, I'll try it out
A feature is something you can turn off, a bug is somethig you can't turn off. So... what is this ugly grid shadow? Design or not, I think it completely ruins the otherwise stunning graphics. :(
i have an ati 4850. and i have this bug, but i didnt wanted to spam forum with yet, another bug thread...

I'm no expert (and I don't have an ATI card), but that seems bloom gone wrong. Maybe try to disable it and see if the problem persist, just to pinpoint the problem

Thank you for the second advice. I've put "1" on the ubersampling line and oO. I don't recognize my game. And the cherry on the cake? No fps loss \o/ .
Was there ever any more information or a better solution for this?

I am getting this problem now badly. I have not played this game for a long time but I don't seem to remember it this bad before on a previous install. Setting ubersampling to 1 did not help. See the picture for what I mean. It is especially noticeable in that picture on Geralt's neck but I feel like overall the whole game has that grid pattern and especially on people's skin.

Necroing an old thread here but a workaround is to set the following value in the config file:

AllowSharpen=0
