I'm also unsure how your test of overclocking and underclocking your video card with no change in performance is proof that it's not your CPU as the bottleneck. One would think that's exactly the type of proof that is showing your CPU as the bottleneck.

Shocking! But I've got one with a ATI 4850 mobility which is the SAME as the desktop excepting slightly lower core/RAM clocks and it'sn slow, while you're using a severely old and castrated nVidia GPU....

(5XXX and 6XXX AMD GPUs for mobility are just as castrated as their nVidia counterparts, but... and BTW I get stutter at defaults for medium on mine...)

Are you using windows 7 64 ??,there is defo some info from the devs knocking about that it uses quad cores and it defo seems to be the case for me.

You did evict 3DVision from your system, right? (That always has to be asked when dealing with a poorly-performing nVidia setup.)

I'd say if going from 2.4Ghz to 3.5Ghz (quad) and you don't see any increase at all, the game is more on the gpu side..


Also oc'ing a gpu (especially laptop) doesn't mean anything, escpecially if your psu can't handle the extra load, then you'll get worse or non performance at all.

Anybody in denial of the concept that CPU performance matters and that perhaps an older dual-core system might be a bottleneck should ask themselves why the developers recommend a quad-core processor. Perhaps they're actually making use of it if available, and there's simply things you won't be able to handle otherwise...

Yes i'm aware of his cpu, but he also said the cpu goes to 2.4ghz during load. I'm assuming the i7 is a quad cpu right?

My quad processor never goes past the 2 cores, never on this game. Overclocking my cpu a whole gigherthz does nothing for me in witcher 2.

However I can't rule out your CPU being a but on the low side either. I know it an turbo up, but your system may decide that its better to turbo up two cores, rather than running all 4 cores.

You might want to try disabling turbo boost and then run the game, it will force your system to use all 4 cores rather than turbo boost 2 of them.

The only 1.6 GHz i7 quad-core that I see is a 2009-era 720QM. The other 1.6GHz i7 is a Sandy Bridge dual-core (2657M) -- so we're talking either fairly dated CPU (still above minimum given the mention of a Core 2 Duo... but below recommended) or a current-generation dual-core.

The nVidia 330M is supposedly based on the GT216 core within the performance range of a Mobility Radeon HD 4650. On a Vostro 3700 (i7 720QM, GT330M) w/ 1GB DDR3, it scored ~6545 on 3DMark06; I'm seeing scores in the 9K+ range for 8800GT setups (the 8800 seems to be the minimum).
