No offense, but I'll never understand why people make statements like this. The game hasn't come out. No one has any idea whether it'll be good or downright awful, apart from hype.

Just saying--making statements as to compare a game that already came out to Skyrim or Human Revolution is based purely on marketing spin. You can't possibly hope to weigh their crippling flaws (of which each game has at least a few) against the positives, so the comparison is entirely meaningless.

Again, no offense.

Well, actually. Preview build of Deus Ex 3 has been available since late May, if you know where to look.

The Witcher 2 truly is an AAA title, but when it comes to a GOTY award it doesn't stand a chance against Deus Ex and The Elder Scrolls.

Those are critically acclaimed, genre-shaping series with huge fanbases. Compared to them The Witcher is the new kid on the block. Sure, it blows out of the water any new RPG, but it can't move these titans of the gaming industry.

Anyway, what's important is that it's a great year for computer RPGs. Strongest line up in years. Pity that TW2, Deus Ex: HR and Skyrim couldn't be joined by a Baldur's Gate 3.

Well, as dnna mentioned an HR beta got leaked, and everyone who's playing it is absolutely raving about it. So unless they manage to make the game worse during development, it's going to be (by the sounds of it) Witcher 2-tier.

Okay, I had no idea that something was leaked. Sorry about that, thought it was just another blind comparison (there was a thread awhile back that was just full of 'em). Then again, I've seen the Witcher 2 beta and how different that was, so you never know.

But I'm actually really happy to hear that the new Deus Ex game is turning out well. Loved the first one.

A friend who played both called DE3 a "love letter to Deus Ex" so I guess you're gonna like it. I'll PM you, the beta wasn't exactly meant to be public.

I say BIG FAT NO to Baldur's Gate 3. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE this series (one of my 3 favorite games all the time), and this is why I don't want to see it being ruined by being Action cRPG with limited interactions between companions, simplified plot and only lasting 40 hours for the sake of improving graphics and new combat system. No, no, no, no! We were promised our "Baldur's Gate's successor" - Dragon's Age - and look what happened. The time of old-school crpgs has, sadly, ended and trying to refresh it would only ended in a failure.
By the way, TW2 needs to achieve a great success on a console market before trying to compete for GOTY throne, IMO.

Also, MvC3 is cool and I still play it from time to time, but how are you not going to pick Super Street Fighter IV:Arcade Edition which is the god of all fighting games and has just been released worldwide?
Because it's been released AFTER the sixth month, and thus is not part of the first half-year?

Nope, sorry..

It's NOT a slam on CPRD or W2, but, how can any game that isn't finished or stable be considered? Hopefully after patch 1.3 this will be true of W2, then we can look for content /expansions that imho should have been part of the release, but thats just me thinking that another 2 chapters were needed.

My point is a disturbing trend is occurring. Games are being released before completion to meet some predetermined date that their world will end if it isn't released just then, and then they say buy it so we can justify fixing it and adding content that may or may not have been originally planned for launch. Paranoia, possibly...I came to expect that methodology with MMO's, but I can't recall any pre-order I've done in the past 5 years that I wasn't having to patch it within the first month to make it work correctly.

The game is beautiful, it is playable, but glitches have made the game aggravating at times. Once the majority of bugs have been addressed, then I would say yeah, it should be considered. But as a consumer, I'd rather vote none of the above for the games nominated if they aren't stable at launch. Then offer them comeback of the year award if they get the dang thing working. just my 2 cents, which in today's economy is worth more if you melted it down and separated out the copper.

But, you know, there are still people - like me for example - who played the game, the occasional bugs didn't bother them and they managed to strangely appreciate the game even despite its flaws. Hell, I played this thing on 4:3 monitor with black bars taking half of my screen and still didn't rage on forums about that.

Arcade edition!
Hmm. maybe it doesn't count as having been released in 2011 due to being DLC (on consoles anyway)?

Speaking of which, it's is the reason my fingers are dead right now ... been trying to switch mains since I have so much trouble using Dhalsim vs the twins.
I'm apparently so bad with non-Dhalsim I can't get over 500 player points.

Well, pokemon games are RPGs ... and Black & White edition is a very good game.
Sure, it's almost the same game as the previous ones, but there were a few tweaks - making TMs reusable totally changes the methods with which you acquire and replace members of your team.

Some parts of it is annoying as hell, but then gigantic speeches (where the PC gets to make a grand total of 1 choice: Yes or No) and grinding are typical elements in (decent) JRPGs.

So no ... having pokemon as a runner up doesn't invalidate the award.
However, having dragon age 2 there does. That game is .. mediocre.

Context...I am trying to state that I don't understand how or why...say Skyrim comes out in late december. Its not broken broken, but it needs a major patch to make it playable for everyone with capable systems, however that patch wont be out until a month after the awards are given. Why would it be considered if say half of the gamers could not even get past the launcher? another analogy this time political. To me this akin to voting for elected office, you end up picking the lesser of evils (voting for the game with the least amount of bugs, or official with the least number of flaws or mental issues), rather than innovation, preparation, and execution (too tired to think of the fourth).
