I've seen a few posts saying that TW2 runs better than TW1, depending on what system you have. I'm curious whether this is considered true generally, since TW1 performance for me was acceptable but not great.

Do you think 2 would have good performance if 1 had decent performance?

Thanks.

I don't know where you got that information. It is almost exactly the opposite.

TW2 is much more demanding of the GPU. Old beasts like the minimum-spec G92 chips will max out TW1 but struggle with TW2 beyond about 1440x900.

TW2 makes better use of dual-core or quad-core CPUs. TW1 only generates enough CPU load for 1 core, even if Windows keeps switching it to different cores.

If you were not fully satisfied with TW1 performance, your system may be a poor risk for TW2 or need an upgrade to play it competently. The GPU is critical for TW2, and many low-cost modern GPUs struggle with it or can't play it competently at all.

Thanks for answering my question, cjrgreen. I've seen a few people post that they've had better performance with TW2, but just a few. Based on the above statement, I may actually be one of the exceptions since I have two quad-core processors (and plenty of RAM).

I'll probably let it go until I get a new rig. My current setup is six years old, so I'm sure it'll happen one of these days. At that point the issue should no longer exist.
Hmm, I don't have very good hardware. I would say my system is mid or low-end nowadays (intel duocore, 4 GB RAM, GTX 260) and I can clearly say that TW2 runs very fluent (on high settings).

I recently played TW2 and TW1 the whole through again and TW2 seem to run better then TW1.

The problem with TW1 is mainly the many loading screens that interrupt the gameplay. Also some combat scenes doesn't run completely well.

Both games are really great and worth playing and comparing both TW2 runs a bit smoother then TW1.

Interesting. Thanks!

UPDATE:

FWIW, I started up The Witcher 1 again. It's been about two years since I played it the first time, and I upgraded my GPU in that time. I've been running it at 1920x1200 with all graphics settings maxed except for AA, which I set to 2x and filtering, which I set to 4x. It looks great and runs perfectly smooth except when I'm running. I think the engine is loading new trees and other objects, and it jerks a little as I move. If I stand in one place and look around, or if I'm engaged in combat, everything is silky-smooth.
