Rammurg: Group fighting is certainly better than in the first game at least, where you would just switch to the appropiate style and click away.
avatar
link1264: At least group combat in the first game actually worked unlike in this game. Fighting a group without using signs or bombs in this game is just a sure way to increase your blood pressure and possibly make you break some of your belongings depending on your temper.

Block is terrible when fighting in groups, since even if you block one enemies' attack, the second you drop your block it's guaranteed that another enemy will land a blow on you the second you release it. And dodge-rolling is only good if you do it before and opponent launches an attack, otherwise you get nailed anyways, especially against the Endrega Queens.

I guess I am just one of those people that prefers a boring fighting mechanic that actually works as opposed to a neat idea that is blood-boilingly broken. It's a shame, since most everything else about The Witcher 2 is better than the first game. But until (and if) combat actually starts working it is just going to be a frustrating experience for me.
Why should fighting groups be easy without bombs and signs? Does it make sense that a guy can just hack and slash a group of enemies like its nothing?

No, I like that its hard. That you have to be smart when thinking groups, dodge often and use all of your abilities.

You aren't superman, you are a guy who must be smart about how he fights.

But, if you hate the combat so much perhaps you should try the Better Combat mod and see if you like playing the game with that since it fixes blocking and other stuff

1.) You misunderstood what I was saying. I didn't say fighting groups should be easy, I said fighting groups should work, which is does not in this game for the reasons I already listed.

2.) CDP told us that we could go full swordsman if we wanted to. However, the abilities they give people on the swordsmanship tree to deal with large groups don't work due to control issues and bugs. That right there makes me feel gypped. And then there is the fact that Witcher's have always used their enhanced reflexes and superb swordsmanship as their weapon and rarely use magic against non-magical foes (I have never even read about Witcher using traps or bombs, but then again, I have only been able to read the two books that have been translated into english so far).

Of course, Geralt seems to be lacking the enhanced reflexes in this game.
Combat in TW2 is just roll spam and is annoying enough with regular mobs, but take the boss fights The kayran is just roll spam, followed by a yrden followed by even MORE ROLL SPAM. Again even Letho is the same deal, but instead of rolling to primarily avoid attacks (you still have to roll spam as Letho has an unlimited supply of bombs and vigor) like you were forced to do with the kayran you roll spam to regen vigor and/or vitality. Roll in attack, take damage roll around for 5 minutes to regen. And well the dragon is just assinine in that the beast can fly and breathe fire yet will choose to instead cling to the side of the tower, instead of hosing Geralt with fire from a distance it will attack you with only bite or slash attacks. Simple trite moronic combat based upon the typical hack and slash model already over done EVERYWHERE and it ruined the game.

Im really curious as to why you think that the original witcher had variation in its combat.

That shows how much you hate and dislike the game combat solely because of your own opinion.

Tell us how you would have combat in Witcher done?
The combat was different in TWEE hack and slash is literally everywhere hell Fable 3 is hack and slash. Yes i played Fable 3 and liked it because they did not change the combat model but Fable 3 is Fable 3, it is not TW and they should be different. Every game this year has followed the same model "the Awesome Button" mentality. It completely ruined DA2, and it completely ruined TW2. IF you want Fable 3 combat Fable 3 is avalable, tell me where can i find TWEE combat? No where except TWEE and yes there is something to be said for different, it was a bit slower and the boss fights were not assinine WoW ripoffs. TWEE combat was unique, it was different and it worked well, and was well suited to the PC interface the current combat is more suited to a console interface.

In that regard there are a few posts here where people have said a controller works better than a mouse and keyboard and i can see that having tossed Nico Bellic around on the blech Xbox version. So another aspect of the "what would i do" is i would have ensured that the combat worked best for the PC interface for the PC version. I would have designed the combat and the game for the console version and the PC as two seperate UI schemes. I would have respect for the core audience who bought the TWEE as a PC only game and not force them because it is cheaper for the company to compromise the design to attempt to shoe horn the combat into a one size fits all model. If that meant that for the PC version the combat remained similar to the TWEE combat so be it.

Even better i would have set it up so that the player could choose at the very beginning of the prologue a choice in combat models. I may have insisted that the player complete the game with the new model for a fair and honest appraisal, but if like me they preffered the old combat model on the next play click the box, and off you go old school. The problem is it is more expensive to do this, so on the cheap they make a decision hoping they chose correctly but no matter you will never make everybody happy, there will be a few like me who prefered the old combat model for no other reason that it was different than everything else.

And yes if i could get my money back i would, in a heart beat. But you see i bought my game here and all sales are final i already looked. That was my mistake and it will be the last time i make that mistake and my last game i buy here, as a matter of fact this will be the last new game i buy from any digital delivery service including Steam and the last i pre order unless hotels, hookas AND hookers are the pre order bonus. I will instead go to brick and mortar stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy etc, because had i bought my copy of TW2 from one of them i would have returned it already, letting CDPR fight with the store over who gets paid, content to walk away unconcerned as to how it works out.

Age has perks and since I am 45 years old, if i walk in and say any of the following or better combine a few ; 1) this game does not work on my machine, 2) i bought this as a gift for my nephew and his parents do not want him playing it, 3) i got this as a gift and well the content (hint to the adult nature of the content as it makes me uncomfortable) and i would like to return it, you know what is going to happen? I am going to get my money back, or store credit. Before you scream if i run across one of you smart asses at the returns counter i will just ask for YOUR boss and he/she will give me my money or store credit. If you are the boss i will just fire an email or a phone call to corporate, i will still get my money back. I have the resources and the time that if you pop up on my radar and i do not get satisfaction i will complain until i do. My mistake was buying into the CDPR myth hoping to be a good consumer sheep supporting a PC game company yet here i am stuck with a game i do not like and no recourse, NEVER AGAIN.

Well you got me there sport as an adult i do have a fundamental understanding of 50 dollars. For me money is not something i go to mommy or daddy for it is something i earn, so yes it has a certain value. That value is related to how much nonsense my fellow hairless monkeys desire of me as i go about my work day. Come see me when money is something you have to earn and manage when the fridge is stocked by you and not the parental units. Talk to me when your are hungry not because the Mc Donalds closed but because you only eat when you hunter gather. Perspective sport is something ONLY TIME provides. You taunt me which is fine i do enjoy a bit of verbal sparing, i just hope you can up your game somewhat. Even though there is a certain entertainment value in this exchange and considering that even this is MORE entertaining than the game it still is getting old, If i may borrow a quote "your out of your element Donny".

Witcher 1 combat was good in some ways, but you have to agree that the timing mechanic didn't add anything to the swordfights. And that game had an "awesome button" - namely, upgraded igni (and before that, aard.) In any case, my impression was that the core of both systems - your flexible arsenal - is present in force, and neither one strikes me as significantly deeper.

Everything you mentioned are all your OWN opinion. Of course there are a minority who share your views but certainly Witcher 2 is well received overall (indicated by CDPR).

So by your definition, CDPR must make 1 (ONE) game just for your right? You failed to see that if CDPR take your OPINION seriously and made it into a game, they had probably make loss and never see the light of CDPR next sequel again.

Archhaven are you and Freewind huffing glue from the same bag? If so come up for some fresh air huh?

If i may quote you here from the post i answered you asked "Tell us how you would have combat in witcher done?". That is a direct quote i am reading it right now.

I gave you what you asked for and i did not say THEY had to what i said was I would have..... Which directly answers your question, and yet somehow not getting the answer you wanted or not even understanding the question you asked is now my fault?

And now in your current post you by extrapolation of the following and i quote you again

"You failed to see that if CDPR take your OPINION seriously and made it into a game, they had probably make loss and never see the light of CDPR next sequel again."

by extention you are saying TWEE sucked.

You are saying that you did not like TWEE? That the original game was so bad that if they followed the same model fixing the broken stuff like inventory and the saves just to point out 2 areas where TW2 was not fixed, that TWEE and TW2 would be loose money? That if they stuck to a similar combat model that you would not buy, play or enjoy TW2?

I still have to ask you and everybody else here, If TWEE was so terrible, the combat was so boring, what in the hell ever possessed you to play TWEE in the first place? With that thought why would you even consider giving TW2 a chance especially since there was no way to tell how combat was going to work until immersed in the game after the purchase had been made. Had i seen like Bioware did with a demo, the combat of TW2 i would have cancelled my TW2 order, it was not I who left the fold it was the fold who left me by such a radical departure from the previous game's mechanics, with no warning either. Plus ignoring the broken aspects of TWEE having mentioned Inventory and the saves menu.

This is not a subtle departure from TWEE mechanics here it is a radical console compromised change from out of the blue as no warning was given by CDPR concerning the change in game play mechanics. I did not get what i bought or thought i was buying, what i got is alien and foreign not that is necessarily a bad thing, except in this case. I bought TW2 because i was under the impression i was getting an improved Witcher and that is not the case, you could make an argument if they actually fixed the inventory and saves, (which was pointed out by me on the original forums years ago) and made the change in combat mechanics, but that stuff is still broken even more so now with the removal of inn keeper storage.

TW2 is NOT an improvement, it is however console compromised trash.

TWEE in terms of story and plotline is awesome. I believe overall (even acknowledged by CDPR) that the combat in original TW is not well received. And personally i think the combat in original Witcher sucks. It happens that you likes it and you been repeating in many of your posts of the same thing.

It's not CDPR's fault if you have bought the game blindly. There are enough gameplay videos, developers diary, interviews showing how the combat plays out.

I don't understand the people who think combat in this game works better with a 360 controller. I tried combat with a controller a friend lent me and it was worse. The only aspect of this game that is better with a controller is navigating menus. Combat is so much better with a mouse and keyboard. I can pan the camera much quicker and therefore don't get hit by off-screen opponents as much.
