rjmill2709: The game is very CPU dependent. The minimum system specs advertised could prob not run the game at all, my Q9550@3.3ghz and GTX 280 only give me 20-30 fps no matter the settings. I finally had to hook up an old 720p monitor to get a playable framerate.
I ran Coretemp and all my cores were less then 40C with utilizations of an occasional 40% spike yet my GPU using MSI Afterburner was maxing at 76%. I have an OC i7-930@3.8Mhz and an GTX570 OC to a GTX 580 spec!!

So my vote is with GPU sorry guy you lose that round!! I'm playing vsync, constant 60FPS, 1900x1200 res (dont like that rez so toned it down to 1600x900) all ultra cept stupid uber sampling knocks me down to 30FPS minuoise difference!!
Couldn't be bothered reading the other posts, but just in case someone hasn't already made the point.. this game is pretty much EXCLUSIVELY gpu bound.. I have a four year old E6750 chip and ddr2 ram and yet it runs smoothly with EVERYTHING (including supersampling) turned on ever since I got myself a 2nd hand ati 5870 for like 120e. Then again, aside from big simulation/rts games like the total war series or supreme commander I have yet to fail in my 10 year-and-going-strong logic that at the very worst for every 3 gpu's you need a cpu upgrade..or basically, to be on top you need a gpu every 2 years or so while quality cpu's can last up to 5 years without bogging down your gpu so much for you to take serious notice.

I'm playing it on an old system (Pentium 4 3.0 GHz w/ WinXP SP2. The only 'new' parts are a GT 430 2GB GPU and 2 GB RAM).

Settings are mostly on 'low'. (I have all the DoF stuff enabled, to make backgrounds more bearable to look at, texture downscaling on low, and texture memory thingy on very large)

Like the other guy, I get really bad framerates in 'crowded places' (Flotsam, Vergen, the place in Chapter 3. And even some of the battle sequences in the Prologue), but I get 'decent enough' framerates (I dunno the exact figures, I didn't bother turning on anything to give me a count) when 'outdoors' or far away enough from the 'crowded places'.

So...CPU-heavy?
Well, okay, for one thing you have an ancient cpu even by my modest standards (like I said, four year old cpu). But more importantly, your gpu is crap, tbh. Trust me, even on that cpu you'd get MILES better mileage even with something like a 4870.

If I have the time I'll throw in my 4870 but I'll have to turn on the air conditioner and put on earmuffs (Is there a helicopter outside by my window)what a screecher 90-100C and 80-100% fan going!!

Yeah. I bought it without checking up on reviews/reading up about it (my 8800 GT 512MB died, so I went out for a quick, cheap replacement...as I didn't want to spend too much since I am saving up for a better system).
Still, I think the 430 GT I have runs some games better than my 8800 GT did. *shrugs*
But, yes, I need new stuff. :D

The 8800gt is much better than the gt430.
Heck the 8800gt is much better than a gt440.

Not until you get to the gt450 do you experience better performance than an 8800gt.

Also does anyone know of options to change to reduce CPU usage.
Flotsam is quite annoying to play in with all the stuttering,
Everything before that ran smooth.
