Takeshi_K: Will the patch have any impact on weak performance? Anyone know if CD Projekt RED are planning any further optimization of the game?
Gotta remember this game has VERY detailed graphics and are reported to stress even some expensive cards. I suspect there were be modest performance improvements. Think the patch was primarily to fix bugs, problems with DLC/registration. AI tweaks, action optimizations and the like will probably be there but may not be the focus. Combat control issues I suspect will be high on the list as every review I've read reported issues with it. There are other ways of tweaking your machine to squeeze a few bits of CPU cycle blood from your "stone" too:
Disable all non-essential services in Windows. On Windows Vista/7 you can get a significant boost by disabling the "Superfetch" service that was originally designed to cache ALL your programs. It doesn't have any performance enhancement I've seen, quite the opposite in my experience, especially with home users. See this article:
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/disable-windows-7-superfetch/
and this:
http://windows7themes.net/windows-7-services-safe-to-disable.html I ALWAYS disable the remote registry services. That one is not only a waste of CPU cycles, its DANGEROUS unless you are in an office with network admins. If you don't mind installing OS Patches manually after downloading them from MS, you can disable the Automatic Update service too. (otherwise it may install "priority" updates even if you tell it not it in the user interface. (reports by several net admins)
I've read that the SecuROM enbedded in the DVDs also slows frame rates (surprising) and several postings show how to incorporate the GOG binaries to get better FPS. Just for fun you could try running it with the Internet disconnected (physically). Suspect you'll see slightly better performance (I could be wrong, I just do it to be safe, not running the game till I get the patch, save installation time)
Some antiviruses use way too many CPU cycles. Among them, Macafee and Symantec are pretty bad in this regard in my experience. AVG used to be good but latest version added some bloatware in my latest test. Avira and Eset appear to keep CPU use at more reasonable levels. Not that I would recommend not running Security software, unless the PC is offline. (Cable disconnected)
The biggest boost will probably be from video driver updates. Especially with Crossfire. I wonder about the few dual GPU single cards. Friend of mine has one that few of his games could take advantage of...till now....?
Hope that helps...
