Xzifer: ohk I'm so confused .. i got my copy from the retail store down the street from me EB games what patch do i get ?? and will me Xbox 360 controller still work .. and I'm not having any issues with the witcher 2 ATM besides a crash that takes me back to the launch screen about every 4 hrs or so .. im also in Australia
Yeah - your Xbox 360 controller will still work. The only thing that's changed is that for some people they have to use the D-pad in the menus and the quick menu - the analog still won't scroll in those screens. That happened to me, but as far as fighting and maneuvering in the game it's the same -- AND you don't have to switch to keyboard in the attributes/knowledge screen in order to read about nekkers or add mutagens :-)

Edit: the "back" button still can't be programmed into the game :-(

Aspenwood: Unfortunately, at least with the retail version, reinstalling doesn't help, as the stupid thing auto-updates immediately to 1.1; there's no way around it as far as I can tell. If you cancel out before verification you can't play as you're missing the day one 1.0 patch (thank you, online verification for a product I bought in store!), and if you go through said verification process or bypass it and patch the game manually you end up with 1.1. I don't see why they don't just put the day one 1.0 patch up for download.

NewYears1978: I don't think it autoupdates to 1.1.

People keep saying that..but when I reinstalled it did a patch but it wasn't 1.1

I know this because the DLC didn't work, until I manually ran the 1.1 patch, which it did allow me to install. Had it already been up to date it would have said so.
Gonna try posting this again, as my first one didn't seem to go through.

There seems to be a difference between GOG and retail, as GOG version came with the day one patch (read: without having files necessary for playing removed from the DVD), and thus did not require verification. Therefore people with GOG version can roll back to 1.0. However, people who have retail (like me) are screwed, as the retail edition required the day one patch (verification) to get to 1.0 and be able to play; because you cannot play the retail edition of the game without updating, there is no way to get to 1.0 anymore, as it does not exist as an independent download (as far as I'm aware), and the patcher automatically goes to 1.1.

StingingVelvet: Am I imagining things or does the game look significantly worse with this patch applied? It seems like pop-up was worse and textures are worse. I double-checked my settings were the same as I had them before.

Weird.
It looks just as good to me, and my fps has gone up by 10-15. Is there a chance that you changed something in your card settings or your monitor settings since you last played?
Still no 16:10 support? How hard can this be to fix??

I think 16:10 and 7.1 sound are for the next patch. Next week probably.

Pretty sure the patch resets your video settings. Check that, happened to me. Looks fine back on my regular settings.

Yes there would be a difference. Technically the GOG build would have actually be done LATER than the DVD as GOG.com allows instant distribution on release day so the "day one" patch could be compiled into the build plus GOG had the added advantage of being CDPR's SISTER company so a strong relation existed allowing them to do builds quicker than anyone else I would guess.. DVD's take time to ship to distribution and reseller points so the build would be older and therefore didn't have the day one patch in the installer.

I'll give CDPR credit in this regard: they appear to be sincerely listening. So I suggest to get a few of your fellow "victims" put a few posting here and on the public form asking for the day one patch for retail as a separate build. They are more likely to do it I think now that the SecuROM is removed in patch 1.1. Given that, if I had purchased the DVD (which I wouldn't do because of the DRM), I'd stay with the 1.1 patch as the SecuROM takes CPU cycles and FPS. Overall consensus is that the OFFICIAL 1.1 patch (not the premature accidentally released one) in the majority of cases didn't make anything worse (and probably made non-working quests doable), I would try to reinstall again in the followng manner:

1. Run the installer
2. Delete ALL folders and files left by the program. If you aren't sure where they are, try c:\program files\ using your file explore and find the place where it is stored. You can also search for the folder name "CookedPC" which should belong to the game. Delete any folders/files appearing to relate to the game. (parent folder should be (name of drive)\program files\.

If you are well versed in editing the registry you may want to remove any registry entries related to the witcher located in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE section and/or the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE sections before you reinstall. when I am in doubt and want a clean install I try to remove EVERYTHING the program leaves behind so I'm sure its really clean.

Then I suggest disconnecting the computer from the Internet before reinstalling to prevent the auto updater kicking into play and applying stuff automatically thay may interfere with patch being installed manually. (the 1.1 patch I think assumes a CLEAN install), and apply the patch manually. Then reconnect to the Internet if you wish and get any DLC you haven't backed up or downloaded yet. Since SecuROM is removed in Patch 1.1 you may not need to activate.

Hope this helps.

Yes! Some have reported issues until they removed EVERYTHING and went from scratch. See my last posting to do a truly clean reinstall.

Coelocanth: Have to reinstall the game, unfortunately. There's no revert patch.

All I know is I'm beyond fed up with this crap, and doubt I'll buy another game from CDP. There's been very little communication on their part, not to mention the whole going back on their "We'll never put DRM in a game" statements, and of course, all the problems they've created with this "patch."

And meanwhile, the pirates are playing without these problems.
Has anyone tried reinstalling Witcher 2 with the Internet DISCONNECTED? that I think would stop the auto-installer...wouldn't it? You shouldn't need the game/installer running to manually install the patch files if I understand the software mechanics correctly.

if I do a reinstall from gog, will it include the 1.1 patch? I would love it if that is the case.
avatar
skylineR390: I'm using the gog version and since the patch I've been having major stuttering.

Is there a way to uninstall the patch or do you have to reinstall the game?
Really? That sucks...I initially read it didn't make anything worse but...well, you've proven that isn't always the case. This patch is truly a mixed bag of tricks for FPS improvement/reduction (?!?). In my experience, most patches cannot be installed once installed. And since this is an EARLY (first attempt) patch package to the public, I don't think they've had time to create an version shapshot routine (though they may in the next one). Gut feeling is, you install the patch and it fails, need to removely cleanly and reinstall from stratch to avoid potential component version mismatch. (Simply Installing again without clean removal makes a mess as often as not if you did any major updates since original install)

Not quite but...there is a silver lining....the first build from GOG included the "day one" patch that retail DVD buyers didn't get. This has been reported to more stable in many cases than the 1.1 patch (either GOG or Retail DVD) and much better than any of the DVD installs. So, if you can, try the Witcher 2 from GOG using the initial build. If there are any serious issues, then get the 1.1 patch which is available as a separate file in the "bonus content" section of the GOG download dialog of Witcher 2 in your software library
